BEK is an interdisciplinary production centre for art and new technology.
BEK develops, produces, and communicates artistic projects in the intersection of contemporary art, technology, theory and social critique. I dag er Fellesverkstedet på Stortinget, sammen med Norske Grafikere og Aggregat kunstnerfellesskap.
På vegne av et nyoppstartet nasjonalt nettverk av fellesverksteder i Norge, har vi kommet med et høringssvar til stortingsmeldingen Kunstnarkår. Det er svært positivt, og på høy tid, at det settes fokus på infrastruktur for kunst. Men meldingen har kritiske mangler: tiltak for, og anerkjennelse av, produksjonsleddet - nærmere bestemt verksteder.
For at kunst skal kunne eksistere, oppleves og formidles - må den først produseres. Fellesverkstedene i Norge tilbyr lavterskel tilgang til profesjonell kompetanse, maskinparker og fasiliteter, og arbeidsplasser til de som trenger det. Kunstnere, og andre kreative, kommer til oss med sine idéer, vi gir dem muligheten til å realisere de.
Alt dette har også vært sentralt i Fellesverkstedets pågående arbeid med Fase 2, som inkluderer nettverksbygging i feltet, og det har gitt oss gleden av å samarbeide med mange organisasjoner som har som mål å skape en bærekraftig fremtid for kunstfeltet gjennom å tilby produksjonsmuligheter, over hele landet.
Dette er første gang fellesverkstedene i Norge samles og representeres på nasjonalt nivå. Vi er mer motiverte enn noen gang, og bretter opp ermene for fremtiden:

Our hearts are warm and minds brimming with exciting new knowledge and thoughts after this weekend’s symposium The Only Lasting Truth is Change. We thank you all – artists, audience, collaborators – for taking part in the symposium, for the mind-expanding contributions of the amazing artists and thinkers, and the new, precious connections being made through the moments in between. Now we take some days off to rest before the last leg of the symposium, Suzanne Kite’s “Dreaming with Humans and AI Workshop” on 2 & 3 December.

Jonathan Liu has trained a generative model with footage from his mountain hikes in Bergen this week, shot on his Super 8-camera. The resulting images melts the data together, like a data soup, recreating the ambiguous experience of a hike. ⛰️🏔️

Yesterday’s writing lab led by Carol Stampone featured writings, talks and thoughts inspired by the ideas of Tung-Hui Hu. Thank you to everyone who came — and tune in to the symposium this Friday for a talk with Carol Stampone and Tung-Hui Hu at Østre, 20:30 CET.
Ways of enduring the broken world – a writing lab hosted by Carol Stampone, is happening tomorrow – 14 Nov, 18:00–20:00 at BEK, C. Sundts gate 55. The session is inspired by Tung-Hui Hu's book "Digital Lethargy", which Stampone and Hu will discuss further in conversation during the symposium on Friday evening.

"Digital Lethargy" describes the atmospheres of exhaustion that result from digital capitalism. Whether it manifests as depersonalization, busy idleness, or burnout, this condition permeates our lives under digital capitalism, though it is felt particularly keenly by racialized “servers” in Asia and the Global South.

«Replicator Workshop» ledet av Magnhild Øen Nordahl og Gabriele de Seta, fant sted på BEK og Aldea denne uken med kunstnere Andreas Zissler, Funda Zeynep Ayguler og Hans Carlsson. Over tre dager har de diskutert, utforsket og testet ut forholdet mellom generativ KI i fysisk produksjon. De har blant annet besøkt Patricia Sichmanova og Cameron MacLeod og lært om deres bruk av kunstig intelligens i sin praksis.
Øen Nordahl, de Seta og Zissler ser tilbake på, viser frem og utreder om funnene av workshopen under symposiet, i en samtale på Østre, 18. november 16:00.

«Another Deep» er Sébastien Robert og Mark IJzermans visuelle og soniske utforsking av den kommende dyphavs gruvedriften i Svalbard-regionen. Prosjektet tar sikte på å synliggjøre potensielle miljømessige, geopolitiske påvirkninger, samt utfordringer for urfolk, som følger av gruvedrift på havbunnen. «Another Deep»-prosjektet skal resultere i et audiovisuelt liveshow, og Sébastien og Mark jobber med lydsporet i BEKs lydstudio denne uken.
"Another Deep" is an immersive art project created by Sébastien Robert and Mark IJzerman to visually and sonically explore the impending deep-sea mining in the Svalbard region. The project aims to bring visibility to potential environmental, geopolitical, and Indigenous impacts resulting from the mining operations.
The outcome of "Another Deep" will be an audiovisual live show, and Sébastien and Mark are working on the sonic part of the show in BEK’s sound studio this week.

Since the beginning of 2023, we have been part of Re-Imagine Europe’s project New Perspectives for Action. Re-Imagine Europe: New Perspectives for Action is a four-year transnational co-creation and circulation project, aiming to equip and empower young Europeans through artistic practices to better withstand societal challenges triggered by rapid climate change. In the upcoming four years, we are excited to bring forward a multifaceted artistic and cultural programme consisting of close to 700 activities - including 80 commissioned artworks touring across Europe, 50 artist residencies, 40 workshops, 40 symposia, and more than 200 podcasts, videos, releases and publications and much more.
