Hugo | Limp binding

A binding I made last year for the Hugo Grotius challenge and is now part of the exposition Laws of War | Limits to violence at the Rijksmuseum Slot Loevestein.

The binding is inspired by a 17th-century leather limp binding. These limp bindings were mostly used for functional books like records, accounts and notes for use on a daily basis.

I felt it an appropriate binding technique for a book on the law of war and peace and specifically about protecting innocent people during times of war.

The leather of the cover has been dyed with a craquelle technique to reflect the diverse questions and perspectives within the book.

Printed as a special edition by the Dutch Association for Bookbinding to commemorate the book of Hugo Grotius 'De iure belli ac pacis' (On the Law of War and Peace).

The starting point was a 1991 edition, "Hugo de Groot: Thinking about War and Peace," with a selection of excerpts from the original, by legal historian Arthur Eyffinger and legal scholar Ben Vermeulen.

Techniques used:
Limp binding with indirect tacketing. The text block has been sewn on tapes with wooden strips and fastened to the cover with separate tackets.
Craquelle leather dyeing (thank you Gilian .books for explaining!!)

Size: 170 x 255 mm | 288 pagina’s in 18 sections.

My binding, along with 20 others, is on display till 26th of March at Rijksmuseum Slot Loevestein, NL

Gold tooling on leather

Finished making and gold tooling a semi-limp leather binding.
Title in morse code.

Many months ago I very much enjoyed the masterclass by learning the art of gold tooling.

Finally I had some quiet & focused
time to finish my book with gold leaf tooling.
Together with we had a very joyful day getting back into tooling, handling the gold leaf and making messy tables. Looking forward to further exploring tooling in 2026!

In Principio

My entry for the international exhibition of designer bookbinding Scripta Manent VII.

The set book was „In principio. The Word in Arvo Pärt’s Music“ - celebrating the 90th birthday of world-famous Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and the 500th anniversary of the first book published in Estonian.

Organised by The Estonian Association of Designer Bookbinders. 173/200 copies.

The music of Arvo Pärt inspired me to bind the sections of the book using this adhesive-free flowing, interlocking structure, the Australian Reverse Piano Hinge binding. I also know this structure as the Steckalbum that I loved learning years ago from Nadine Werner

On the outside: Arvo's drawing of mountains and valleys on a music staff, as shown in the book and reflecting his words:

Iga lüli peab hingama.
Armastada kõiki helisid võrdselt,
see ongi muusika.
| Arvo Pärt
Every joint must breathe. To love all sounds equally - that's what music is all about | Arvo Pärt.

The sections of the book are connected by one long piece of paper that creates the spine and makes the connection with the boards. The boards have been made with laser printing and laser cutting.

The book can lay perfectly flat. Love how the hand-marbled paper by keeps it all together.

My binding, along with 148 others from across the world (how amazing!!) is on show in the Scripta manent VII exhibition at the Estonian History Museum in Tallinn until 16 November 2025.

Great days exploring and creating Voluminous Volumes with

We made several book structures that can accommodate the added volume of material.

For me, an intruguing alternative to the conventional album structure with blank pages intended for storing or displaying photos, art, prints, and documents that create added volume.

Looking forward to a long summer, playing with and finishing the other voluminous book structures!

Looking after Tintin
(or Kuifje in Dutch)

The client entrusted both my fellow student and me to each treat one of his treasured comic books. A special project for my restoration and conservation exam this September.

The book is a first edition from 1958 and was in three pieces.

First, some small paper repairs inside, followed by resewing the one-section bookblock, then re-backing with a new paper spine matching the old, consolidation and repair of the cover sides and the corners.

Sharing some satisfying before & after photos. After the exam, the books were returned together with an extensive report. A happy client wrote: 'After comparing the book with your report, I have even (much) more appreciation for your work.'

Graduated!!

I've been quiet here, mainly because I had to focus on my college exam for book restoration and conservation in practice.
Yesterday was the last oral exam, and we all got our diploma!

Showing some of my exam books that are in different shades of brown & in paper, leather or linen.
Finishing touch for each book was the conservation enclosure, a four flap with a locking tab, made of acid-free card.
