The U.S., specifically the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), has recently removed two memorial panels dedicated to Black World War II soldiers from the visitors’ center at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg.

These panels, which honored African American soldiers who served and died during World War II, were installed in mid-2024 after advocacy efforts but were reportedly taken down earlier in the summer of 2025 without notification to local officials in the Limburg province.

One panel highlighted the story of George H. Pruitt, a Black American soldier buried at Margraten. Another panel more broadly addressed racial segregation and the significance of Black service members’ efforts in Europe.

The ABMC stated that panels are on rotation due to space limits, claiming that the removal was part of a routine display update, and that the Pruitt panel “is not out of rotation.” However, critics—including the Black Liberators initiative and local officials—contend there is no explanation for why the panel on segregation was removed, calling the lack of transparency troubling.

Local Dutch officials and community members in Limburg were not warned in advance and have voiced concern, demanding that U.S. authorities restore or permanently commemorate the Black soldiers’ contributions.
