He wears loosely draped robes opening at the chest and falling in voluminous, cascading folds.

The serene face is characterised by heavy-lidded downcast eyes inlaid with crystal, gently arched brows. The hair is arranged in tight curls rising over a domed ushnisha.

The figure is of yosegi (joined-block) construction, and seated on a double lotus throne.

A complete smoking set comprising a kiseru’zutsu 煙管筒 (pipe case) and tabako’ire 煙草入 (to***co pouch).

The kiseru’zutsu 煙管筒 (pipe case) of muso’zutsu form and crafted from kurogaki wood (black persimmon) inlaid in silver and gold takazôgan 高象嵌.

The kiseruzutsu is of muso’zutsu form and crafted from kurogaki (black persimmon) wood, richly inlaid in silver and gold takazôgan 高象嵌. The decoration depicts a foreign figure with elongated legs, curly hair, a short beard, and long earlobes. He wears short trousers and wooden geta, holds a mallet, and shades his eyes with one hand as he gazes into the distance.

The upper rim is mounted with a silver collar, and the cord attachment is formed as a subtly shaped double gourd in gold. The top mount is further adorned with a small applied silver and gold Japanese flag motif. The case is fitted with a dark silk cord, terminating in a large green malachite ojime.

The accompanying dark brown leather tabako’ire is fitted with a silver mae’kanagu front fitting, modelled as the pair of yôkai Ashinaga-tenaga 足長手長 (“Long Legs and Long Arms”). The metal mount retains traces of gilding.

Period: Japan, late Edo period (first half 19th century).

Aida Tomiyasu 会田富康 (1901–1987) was a Japanese metal artist from Tateyama City 館山市, Chiba Prefecture 千葉県. Born Ibara Meijirô 井原明治郎, he studied metalwork under Yamamoto Azumi 山本安曇. From 1929 onward he exhibited regularly at the government-sponsored exhibitions Teiten 帝展, Shin-Bunten 新文展, and Nitten 日展, receiving the Grand Prize at the Nitten in 1948. He later served as juror and council member of the Nitten and became chairman of the Kôsai-kai 工彩会.
Internationally, his work was shown at the New York World’s Fair and the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. Aida was also a noted scholar of ancient Japanese seals and casting techniques, authoring several important studies on these subjects. His works are held in museum collections.

Shown is an elegant patinated bronze kôro 香炉 (incense burner) by the Nitten artist Aida Tomiyasu 会田富康 (1901–1987).

The gently arched form is articulated by a central ridge and stands on a cylindrical foot. The flush-fitting cover is surmounted by a finely modelled hare, seated upright with long ears raised, wide-set eyes, and its front paws held close to the mouth. Surrounding the hare is a circular band of pierced openings, accentuated by delicately carved linear details tracing the outlines.

A very rare and exceptional tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring refined Rinpa School–style paintings on both sides, each panel centred around an inset sudare 簾 (rattan blind). The blinds create a soft, semi-transparent effect, gently obscuring the opposite side.

The front displays clusters of chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) in various heights, colours, and forms, arranged in sprays along slender bamboo frames, all set against a shimmering gold-leaf background.

The reverse presents a tranquil bamboo 竹 (take) grove painted on a mulberry paper ground.

A Japanese patinated bronze okimono modelled after a naturalistic lion, standing four-square on a rocky outcrop. The animal is shown alert and proud, with its head slightly turned to the right and held upright in a confident pose.

The lion’s muscular body, fur, and mane are realistically rendered, showing close attention to natural anatomy and movement. The modelling closely follows the style of works by Asakura Fumio 朝倉文夫, known for his lifelike animal sculptures, and should be understood as after or in the manner of his work rather than a piece by his hand.

The sculpture rests on an organically shaped rocky base, cast in two pieces attached together. Finished with a dark bronze patina with subtle green colour variation, developed through age.

An outstanding cast alloy kei 磬 (Buddhist chime) suspended from an ornate keidai 磬台 (chime stand).

The kei is shaped in the traditional chevron form and decorated with an embossed chrysanthemum 菊 (kiku) strike panel, flanked by a pair of phoenixes 鳳凰 (hô’ô) in flight. Chimes of this type are struck during the recitation of sutras and produce a clear, resonant clang.

Such instruments derive from ancient Chinese ritual chimes (qing) and were adopted in Japan primarily for use in Buddhist temple ritual.
The chime is suspended from a richly decorated stand finished in gilt lacquer. The keidai is fitted with intricate openwork brackets carved in the form of swirling clouds, executed in polychrome pigments. At the centre appears a crest (mon) depicting wisteria 藤 (fuji). The upper beam is lobed and end in gently scrolling ends.

A charming, rare Fushina pottery ladle rest 蓋置 (futa’oki) of the Sanen 三猿 (Three Wise Monkeys), by the Rakuzan workshop.

A compact composition showing the three monkeys huddled together, each seated and performing the classic gestures of “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”

Rakuzan pottery 楽山焼 falls within the tradition of Fushina (Fujina) ware 布志名焼, the official goyôgama 御用窯 kiln of the Matsudaira clan of Matsue in present-day Izumo. The kiln’s origins date to the early Edo period, when the 21st Matsudaira Tsunataka requested a Hagi ware potter from the neighbouring Mori clan.

Permission was granted to the third Matsudaira lord of Izumo, Matsudaira Isunachika, around 1677. The founders of the kiln were Kurasaki Gonbei and Kada Hanroku.

Although production continued through the centuries, the kiln was revitalised under Matsudaira Harusato 松平治郷 (Fumaikô 不昧公, 1751–1818), whose refined aesthetic shaped its style. Later, in the late 19th century, the Nanga scholar and artist Tanomura Chokunyû 田能村直入 contributed to its artistic renewal by introducing new decorative techniques.
