Citadel Museums and Sites

Citadel Museums and Sites The Citadel museums and sites are unique individual properties, yet they complement each other with their narratives relating to Gozo's rich history.

The display at the 𝗚𝗼𝘇𝗼 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 illustrates the rich material culture of the small island of Gozo from prehistoric times up to the arrival of the Knights of St John. The 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 is a small, yet fascinating, historic site whose origins go back to the time of the Knights. The prison cell walls are covered with authentic graffiti produced by the inmates. The 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗼

𝘂𝘀𝗲 is a complex of Late Medieval and Early Modern houses, thus making them the oldest-surviving buildings within the Citadel walls. Visitors can experience how locals lived in bygone times. The 𝗚𝗼𝘇𝗼 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 offers displays relating to the natural environment of the island, and includes topics like geology, marine habitats, birds and insects. The four museums are further complemented by the 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀’ 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 which is included in the entry ticket. Here visitors may enjoy audio-visual and immersive experiences focusing on the history of the Gozo Citadel.

🇲🇹 Qabel ix-𝐗𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐰𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 fi tmiem din il-ġimgħa xtaqna naqsmu magħkom dan il-ġmiel ta’ ritratt li juri wieħed mit-tim qed idaħħal numru ta’ anfori u ankra taċ-ċomb fuq ix-xtajta tax-Xlendi.🏺⚓

Dan ir-ritratt ittieħed fl-1961 meta sar survey ta’ fdalijiet ta’ ġifen Ruman fil-baħar tax-Xlendi. Is-survey kien tmexxa minn tim ta’ esperti mill-Imperial College London, taħt id-direzzjoni ta’ John Woods. Numru ta’ artifatti importanti kienu ttellgħu minn qiegħ il-baħar dakinhar.
🇬🇧 Ahead of the 𝐗𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐰𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 taking place this weekend, we would like to share with you this stunning image entitled “Bringing amphorae and a lead anchor ashore at Xlendi”.🏺⚓

This was taken during the 1961 survey of a Roman wreck at the mouth of Xlendi Bay. The survey was led by a team from Imperial College London, under the direction of John Woods. Several important artefacts were retrieved from this wreck.

🇲🇹 Illum, is-26 ta’ Lulju, niftakru f’dawk li waqgħu waqt l-attakki tal-Assedju t’Għawdex tal-1551 – ġrajja trawmatika fl-istorja ta’ gżiritna.

Il-flotta Ottomana, taħt id-direzzjoni ta’ Sinan Pasha, iddeċidiet li taħbat għall-gżira Għawdxija wara li falla attakk fuq Malta. L-assedju dam għaddej madwar 12-il ġurnata. Is-swar ferm dgħajfin tal-kastell medjevali ċedew wara ftit jiem.

Huwa maħsub li madwar 5000 Għawdxi ttieħdu fil-jasar dakinhar.

🇬🇧 Today, 26th day of July, we remember those who fell during the traumatic event of the 1551 siege of Gozo.

The Ottoman fleet, under the direction of Sinan Pasha, turned to Gozo after abandoning an attack on Malta. The siege lasted about 12 days. The weak fortifications of the medieval Castello succumbed after a few days.

It is thought that about 5000 Gozitans were taken into slavery.

🇲🇹 Illum il-Jum Internazzjonali tar-Ritratt! 👨‍🎨🖌

F’din l-okkażjoni ser naqsmu magħkom dan ir-Ritratt ta’ Raġel Nobbli, li jinsab imdendel fil-kamra tal-pranzu tad-Dar Storika tal-Gran Kastell. 🎨

Ma tantx nafu dwar din il-pittura: la min pittirha u lanqas min qed jippoża. Però stilistikament tappartjeni għal tmiem is-seklu 18 jew bidu tas-seklu 19. Ir-raġel nobbli liebes ilbies tipiku ta’ dan il-perjodu: parrokka bin-nokkli, sidrija fina u rrakkmata, u ġlekk tal-bellus kannella. Wieqaf iħares lejna, b’idu x-xellugija tipponta ’l barra u bl-oħra jżomm kappell. Fl-isfond tidher arma li turi ljun wieqaf fuq saqajh ta’ wara: dan jissimbolizza l-kuraġġ, in-nobbiltà u s-saħħa, u għalhekk qed jirreferi għall-istatus soċjali ta’ din il-persuna.
🇬🇧 It’s International Portrait Day! 👨‍🎨🖌

On this occasion, we share with you this Portrait of a Nobleman that hangs in the dining room of the Gran Castello Historic House. 🎨

Not much is known about the work: neither the artist nor the sitter. The painting is stylistically datable to the late 18th or the early 19th century. The sitter wears typical period dress: a powdered wig, a finely-embroidered waistcoat and a rich brown velvet jacket. He directs his gaze at us, his left hand pointing outwards with confidence, his right hand holding a hat. The rampant lion within the heraldic motif in the background symbolizes courage, nobility and strength, linking the sitter with his noble standing.
