Nandi performed penance for many years to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva blessed him with immortality and made him the gatekeeper of Mount Kailash as per his wish. Nandi also wanted to be a vehicle for Lord Shiva. As per his wish, Lord Shiva transformed Nandi into a bull. So that he could carry Lord Shiva anywhere in the universe.
