2000년 《미디어_시티 서울》이라는 이름으로 시작했던 서울미디어시티비엔날레는 지난 20여 년간 도시 서울과 미디어 환경의 변화 속에서 미술의 동시대성과 실험성을 주목하며 오늘날까지 이어지고 있습니다. 본 비엔날레는 1996년부터 세 번 개최되었던 《도시와 영상》전에서 서울과 미디어 관련 사유의 경험을 나누기 시작했고, 이후 2년마다 열리는 비엔날레 형식으로 시대와 공명하는 다양한 생각과 활동을 담아왔습니다. Since its inauguration in 2000 as an initiative of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seoul Mediacity Biennale has earned international recognition for its experimental

engagement with contemporaneity and the changes of media in the city. The Biennale has shared conceptual experiences on media from its precursor exhibition Seoul in Media, which was held three times between 1996 and 1999. Since then, the Biennale has presented eleven editions, each embodying varying ideas and activities that resonate with its respective time.

기록 — 강연: 장소 만들기와 정체성, 질문하기

지난 6월 20일, 제14회 서울미디어시티비엔날레 사전프로그램 《포란》에서는 서울대학교 지리학과 교수이자 도시정치학자인 신혜란의 강연 〈장소 만들기와 정체성, 질문하기〉​가 진행됐습니다.

인공지능 시대를 살아가는 우리에게 ‘질문하기’는 더욱 중요한 역량이 되었습니다. 이번 강연에서는 질문의 본질을 살피고, 장소 만들기의 과정을 통해 서울의 장소성이 어떻게 형성되고 변화하는지 함께 생각해보았습니다.

강연에서는 심층인터뷰 사례를 바탕으로 일대일 원칙과 예비조사, 기관생명윤리위원회 지침 준수, 사생활 보호, 그리고 질문자와 응답자 사이의 신뢰 형성이 왜 중요한지 살펴보았습니다. 또한 공공공간에 의미와 관계를 부여하는 장소 만들기의 과정으로 이어지는 방식을 짚었습니다.

정체성은 고정된 것도, 하나의 모습도 아닙니다. 사람과 장소와 관계 속에서 끊임없이 만들어지고 변합니다. 서울 역시 누구의 시선으로, 어떻게 이야기하느냐에 따라 새롭게 의미를 획득하는 열린 장소로 이해할 수 있음을 함께 나누었습니다.

On June 20, the 14th Seoul Mediacity Biennale pre-Biennale 𝘐𝘯𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 presented a lecture titled 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦-𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘐𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 by HaeRan Shin, Professor of Geography at Seoul National University and an urban political geographer.

In the age of AI, the ability to ask meaningful questions has become more important than ever. The lecture explored the nature of questioning and invited audiences to reflect on how the identities of places are shaped and transformed through the process of place-making.

Drawing on examples from in-depth interviews, Professor Shin discussed the importance of one-to-one research principles, preliminary fieldwork, compliance with Institutional Review Board guidelines, privacy protection, and building trust between researchers and participants. She also examined how these conversations contribute to the process of place-making, through which meaning and relationships are created in public spaces.

Identity is never fixed or singular. It is continuously made and remade through people, places, and relationships. Seoul, too, can be understood as an open place whose meanings are constantly reimagined depending on whose stories are told and from which perspectives.

지난 5월 22일과 6월 20일, 제14회 서울미디어시티비엔날레 사전프로그램 《포란》에서는 연계 토크와 강연이 진행되었습니다.

김태용 감독의 토크에서는 모더레이터인 박세인 배우와 함께 〈꼭두 이야기〉가 국악극, 영화, 그림책으로 재창작되는 과정에서 매체의 변화에 따라 작품이 어떻게 확장되고 변주되었는지를 살펴보았습니다.

신혜란 교수의 강연에서는 ‘질문하기’의 본질을 되짚어보고, 장소 만들기의 과정을 통해 서울의 장소성이 어떻게 형성되는지를 논의했습니다.

On May 22 and June 20, the 14th Seoul Mediacity Biennale pre-Biennale 𝘐𝘯𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 presented a talk and a lecture.

In the talk, director Kim Tae-yong, joined by moderator and actor Park Sein, explored how 𝘒𝘰𝘬𝘥𝘶: 𝘈 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘴 evolved as it was reimagined across different media—from a Gugak to a film and an illustrated book—examining how the work expanded and transformed through each medium.

In the lecture, Professor Shin HaeRan revisited the essence of “asking questions” and discussed how Seoul's sense of place has been shaped through processes of place-making.

낭독 퍼포먼스 소개 — 『향연』 ⨉ 『꼭두 이야기』
낭독은 소리 내어 읽음으로써 활자에 숨을 불어넣는 행위입니다. 발화의 주체와 조건에 따라 매번 상이한 감각을 발생시키며, 단일한 의미로 환원될 수 없는 복합적인 층위를 드러냅니다. 문학 텍스트는 고정된 결과물로서보다는 읽고 해석하는 과정에서 의미가 발현되는 구성적 실체로서 전개됩니다.

『향연』의 대화는 사랑의 본질이란 무엇인가를 탐구하며, 『꼭두 이야기』는 망자가 떠나는 길을 인도하는 상징적 존재를 통해 삶과 죽음의 동행을 그립니다.

권주영, 박세인 배우의 낭독 퍼포먼스는 전시 기간 중 매주 금, 일요일에 진행되며,

Reading Performance — 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘮 ⨉ 𝘒𝘰𝘬𝘥𝘶: 𝘈 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘴
Reading aloud is an act that breathes life into written text by giving it voice. By reading aloud, text is vividly animated. Due to its performative nature, the act of reading aloud generates different sensations each time depending on the person who is reading and the conditions in which this is carried out, revealing complex layers surrounding the action itself that cannot be reduced to a single meaning. The literary texts thus unfold not as fixed outcomes, but as compositional entities whose meanings emerge through the processes of reading and interpretation.

This includes the dialogue of Plato’s 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘮, which explores the nature of love, while Kim Tae-yong’s 𝘒𝘰𝘬𝘥𝘶: 𝘈 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘴 portrays the companionship of life and death through a symbolic being that guides the departed on their final journey.

Kwon Juyoung, Park Sein’s reading performances take place every Friday and Sunday throughout the exhibition period.
Only today’s and this Sunday’s performance remain.

읽는 행위는 주어진 언어와 의미의 층위를 현재의 사유와 감각 속에서 불러내어 해체하고 재구성하는 창조적이고 역동적인 과정입니다. 이를 통해 과거의 사유와 감각은 현재의 경험 속에서 반복되어 재구성됩니다. 이러한 연속성에 대한 고찰은 창조적 계승으로서 예술 실천이 무엇인지 고민하게 합니다.

『필경사 바틀비』의 저항은 자본주의 사회에서 개인의 자유에 담긴 정치적 함의를 질문하고, 『최후의 질문』은 기술 발전이 이끌어가는 세계에 대한 존재론적 질문을 던집니다.

고영민, 김하리 배우의 낭독 퍼포먼스는 전시 기간 중 매주 목, 토요일에 진행되며,

Reading Performance — 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 ⨉ 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳
More than anything, reading is about inheriting a future that has not yet arrived. The act of reading is a creative and dynamic process of calling forth the given layers of language and meaning into present thought and sensation, then subsequently deconstructing and reconfiguring them anew. Through the act of reading, the thoughts and sensibilities of the past are repeatedly reconfigured within the experience of the present. Reflection on such continuity invites consideration of artistic practice as a mode of creative inheritance.

The resistance articulated in Herman Melville’s 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳 questions the political implications of individual freedom in a capitalist society, with Isaac Asimov’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 posing ontological questions about a world propelled by technological advancement.

Ko Youngmin, Kim Hari’s reading performances take place every Thursday and Saturday throughout the exhibition period.
Only today’s and this Saturday’s performance remain.

〈시: sea(2565)〉는 2021년에 시작된 제시 천의 진행형 연작입니다. 영미권에서 ‘바다’를 뜻하는 단어 ‘sea’가 한국어의 ‘시’로 음차되는 지점에 착안하여, 의미와 소리의 층위가 교차하는 언어적 감각을 탐색하는 무빙 이미지 시입니다. 작품은 매체로서 언어, 생성 원리로서 시학, 그리고 새로운 의미 생성의 계기로서 오역의 가능성을 경유하며 시간과 서사의 비선형성을 탐색합니다.

〈시: concrete poem〉 연작은 작가의 초기작과 이후 확장된 세계관 사이를 매개하며, 개인의 디아스포라적 경험과 맞물려 아시아의 구전 전통과 호흡의 리듬에 기반한 언어관으로 나아가는 작품입니다. 추상적인 언어 패턴으로 암호화되고 재해석된 작품은 읽을 수 있는 것과 읽을 수 없는 것 사이를 가로지르며 언어의 디아스포라적이고 존재론적인 흔들림을 드러냅니다.

ARTWORK — Jesse Chun, 시:𝘴𝘦𝘢 (𝟤𝟧𝟨𝟧), 2022
시:𝘴𝘦𝘢 (𝟤𝟧𝟨𝟧) is part of an ongoing series Jesse Chun began in 2021. Taking as its point of departure the phonetic slippage whereby the English word “sea” is rendered in Korean as 𝘴𝘪—a homophone for the Korean word meaning “poetry”—the work is a moving image poem that explores a linguistic sensibility in which layers of sound and meaning intersect. Traversing language as medium, poetics as a generative principle, and the productive possibility of mistranslation as a catalyst for new meaning, the work explores the nonlinearities of time and narrative.

시: 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘦𝘮 (𝘯𝘰.𝟢𝟪𝟢𝟣𝟤𝟧), 2025
The 시: 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘦𝘮 series mediates between Jesse Chun’s early works and the expanded worldview that emerges in her later practice. Interwoven with the artist’s diasporic experience, the series moves toward a view of language grounded in Asian oral traditions and the rhythms of breath. Encoded and reinterpreted as abstract linguistic patterns, 시: 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘦𝘮 (𝘯𝘰.𝟢𝟪𝟢𝟣𝟤𝟧) traverses the threshold between the legible and the illegible, revealing the diasporic and ontological instability of language.

〈코라〉는 2011년 여름, 2,300km에 이르는 대장정을 떠났던 작가의 개인적인 경험에 기반한 작품으로, 순례자의 발걸음을 따라가며 장엄한 자연과 성스러운 영적 공간을 보여줍니다. 핸드헬드 기법으로 촬영된 영상은 산소가 희박한 고도의 신체적 감각, 바람에 휘날리는 깃발, 땅에 엎드려 오체투지하는 순례자들의 몸짓을 생생하게 포착합니다. 이번 전시에서 작품은 낭독 공연이 진행되는 공간에 설치되며, 낭독이 진행되는 동안 관람객은 텍스트의 배경처럼 펼쳐지는 작품 〈코라〉를 경험하게 됩니다.

ARTWORK — Jawshing Arthur Liou, 𝘒𝘰𝘳𝘢, 2011-2012
𝘒𝘰𝘳𝘢 is a work rooted in the artist’s personal experience of undertaking a 2,300-kilometer journey in the summer of 2011, following the path of a pilgrim through majestic landscapes and sacred spiritual terrain. Shot with a handheld camera, the footage vividly captures the bodily sensations of extreme altitude in thin air, prayer flags whipping in the wind, and the movements of pilgrims prostrating themselves in full-body devotion along the ground. In this exhibition, the work is installed in the space where the reading performance takes place, with visitors able to experience 𝘒𝘰𝘳𝘢 as it unfolds like a backdrop to the literary texts.
