“A generational dialogue between Korea’s iconic abstractionists and today’s rising figurative painters.”
“Masters of Abstraction, New Voices in Figuration” becomes a space where introspective silence meets the immediacy of lived experience. Through this convergence of eras and aesthetics, the exhibition charts a nuanced terrain of Korean contemporary art—where tradition and innovation, formal rigor and emotional resonance, coexist and converse. It is here, in this fertile dialogue, that we encounter art’s enduring questions and its boundless potential.
Korean abstract painting—particularly the Dansaekhwa movement—has long stood as a testament to the depth and meditative rigor of contemporary art. Artists such as Lee Ufan(), Lee Kun-Yong(), Ha Chong-Hyun(), Lee Bae(.art), Oh Se-Yeol(), and Choi Young-Wook have redefined the canvas through gestures of restraint, repetition, and philosophical contemplation. Their works transcend materiality and engage with notions of presence, absence, temporality, and the act of painting itself.
This exhibition brings these masters of abstraction into dialogue with a new generation of figurative painters: Kim Hee-Soo(), Qwaya(), and Facyhosi(.hosi). These emerging voices explore intimacy, identity, and the physical and emotional dimensions of contemporary life through a renewed commitment to figuration. Their paintings offer poignant, narrative-driven perspectives that reflect the human condition with clarity and compassion.
