25th May 2024- Africa Day.
Going back to our roots.
Yesterday, at the Kisumu Museum, in partnership with various schools, Kisumu Environmental champions, World on wheels and other members of the community, we celebrated the Africa Day in style.
African attire was the order of the day, not to forget the famous 'nyoyo, nyuka and rabuon' for lunch, a delicacy highly valued in Western Kenya.
Ours is to ensure we collect, preserve, study, and present Kenya's cultural and natural heritage as seen herein.
We also touched on matters climate change in Africa, conservation and appreciation of our heritage as a people.
Sure enough, this is where heritage lives on.🙂

International Museum Day Celebrations.

Venue: Kisumu Museum.
Theme: Museums for Education and Research.
Geust of Honor: Chief officer- Sports and Culture, Kisumu County.
Attendees: Schools(Primary, Secondary and colleges), KWS, KFS, KMFRI, County Government of Kisumu, Brahma Peace Initiative amongst other guests.
Activities: Educational Talks- NMK,KWS,KFS,KMFRI.

Kisumu fish fiesta 2024.

Culture and Heritage.
As the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), we strive to collect, preserve, study, document and present Kenya’s past and present cultural and natural heritage. This is for the purposes of enhancing knowledge, appreciation, respect and sustainable utilization of these resources for the benefit of Kenya and the world, for now and posterity.

During this year's fish fiesta, the NMK, in partnership with Kisumu County, gave the public the chance to witness the 'return' of 'Omieri', a renowned snake from Nyakach.

This was truly a rare occasion as people from all walks of life trooped in in large numbers to have a coup d'œil at Omieri.

Kisumu Museum also exhibited various collections; These collections are important as they make us appreciate where we've come from, where we are and where we're headed to as a people. We get to learn the crucial role played by NMK in fostering longevity and appreciation for culture,hence the urge to be a global leader in heritage research, innovation and management.

A gargantuan thank you to the National Museums of Kenya, Kisumu My Pride Farida Salim Thomas Ouko kisumu Museum and all those who made the 2024 Fish Fiesta a success.

The Kanga exhibition launch at the Kisumu Museum was a success; 10/04=2024. The exhibition was officially launched by the Director Antiquities, Sites and Monuments, Dr. Fredrick Manthi,NMK. We thank all those who made this a success.
The Kanga exhibition will run through the month of April. Let's all appreciate the sentimental value of the Kanga Cloth.

We had a successful launch of the Pio Gama Pinto Exhibition at the Kisumu Museum.
Kisumu County was represented by the Director of Tourism Mrs. Inviolette Adhiambo. We also had talks from Dr. Samwel Okuro,Senior Lecturer Department of Social Studies Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology and Mr Zahid Rajan, Director Samosa Festivals.
The Exhibition shall run upto 31st November 2023.

Look at the euphoria, the elation, I mean, the pure ecstasy on those faces. You know, Culture and Heritage are truly binder of souls.
Starting today, the 23rd of September 2023, Kisumu Museum is and will be one of the major places tourists will be flocking to during the Kisumu Tourism Week which ends on the 27th of September 2023. We kicked off with tree planting today as both gents and ladies from within and without the City gear up for tomorrow's city run. What a better way to wind up a weekend? Marketing the Museum remains to be one of our main germane and focus point.
The event was graced by the Kisumu County Deputy Speaker and CEC Member for Environment.

The official launch of the Kisumu Museum Art Exhibition.
Talk of panache and pizzazz. The ecstasy here was just out of this world. Art pieces of the best of the best.The Guest of honor was the Kisumu County Deputy Governor, Hon. DR. Mathews Owili. Representing the CEC Department for Sports,Arts and Culture, was the Chief Officer, Arts and Culture, Mr. Timothy Nyakwamba. It's impressive how people are now appreciating Art. The exhibition, dubbed, 'Sulwe Lolwe' which translates to Stars of the Lake, will run fro the next two weeks.
A special thank you to all the partners who made the Exhibition a success.

Earlier on during a site familiarisation of the proposed Nabii Yohana Owalo Mausoleum. Ministry of Tourism Wildlife and Heritage led by CS Peninah Malonza , PS State Department for Culture and Heritage Ms. Ummi Bashir, NMK Board Chairman Eng. Edwin Abonyo, DG National Museums of Kenya Prof. Mary Gikungu, and other officials from the NMK visited Nomiya Luo Church,the first African Independent Church in Kenya. The Church was started in 1907 and currently has over 500,000 followers.

The ICT CS Hon. Eliud Owalo and Members of the Nomiya church were also present at the function.
The Church has such a gratifying and copious history.

Later on, The DG NMK, had a brief tour of Kisumu Museum and interacted with the staff.
