This figure represents the Bodhisattva of Sunlight, a lesser god who serves Yakushi, the Buddha of Medicine. Artisans made the figure over 1,200 years ago from a putty-like mixture of natural lacquer and sawdust, giving the body and robes a soft, naturalistic appearance. Later, this technique fell into disuse because it was extremely fragile and expensive.

Thematic Exhibition
Floral Motifs in Buddhism: Lotus and Hōsōge Flowers

Buddhist art is richly adorned with floral motifs. Among them, the lotus flower holds the most significance, appearing on many Buddhist implements and objects in diverse forms. Another typical floral motif that is featured uniquely in Buddhist art is the hōsōge flower. Originating in Chinese floral motifs from the Tang dynasty (618–907), the hōsōge flower, together with lotus flowers, was adopted into Buddhist designs, enriching the art of Buddhism. We invite you to immerse yourself in the charm of these floral motifs that bloom magnificently on Buddhist art objects.

This cup is carved from rhinoceros horn. Its form—broad at the rim and curving inward toward the base—makes use of the horn’s natural shape. Its surface features an intricately carved scene of an elderly man and a child in a pine grove. Rhinoceros horn was believed to have medicinal properties, including reducing fevers and removing toxins, and was therefore sometimes fashioned into cups.

An adorable monkey rests on a tree branch. A closer look reveals the remarkable technique behind this charming painting: Sansetsu (1590–1651) skillfully controlled the absorption of ink into the paper, using subtle blurring effects to render the monkey’s soft, furry body.

This basin was used for washing one’s hands and face, as well as for applying makeup. The four “horns” made the basin easier to carry. During use, they would also catch the sleeves of one’s kimono, preventing them from getting wet. The surface decoration consists of flowers rendered in gold dust and gold flakes suspended in natural Japanese lacquer.

Japan’s imperial family and nobility considered poetry an essential cultural pursuit. They competed in poetry contests, communicated with their lovers through poems, and spent countless hours studying and practicing this literary art.

In the mid-900s, a master poet named Mibu no Tadamine wrote an influential guide titled Ten Styles of Japanese Poetry. The original version no longer exists, making the oldest surviving copy, displayed here, a priceless resource for the study of early Japanese poetry.

As the guide shows, the beauty of the calligraphy and paper was as important as the poetry itself. During the papermaking process, an artisan incorporated purple and indigo fibers to create a rhythmic pattern of stylized clouds. Over this, the calligrapher transcribed the guide in elegant script using a soft-tipped brush.
