We were in a meeting a while back
when someone suggested using the word hybrid.

The company offered two solutions,
and "hybrid" sounded to them
like a nice way to describe them.

The problem is that hybrid isn't
automatically a compliment.

A horse and a donkey produce a mule.
A mule is a hybrid.

Whether that's a good thing depends entirely
on what you're want the hybrid to accomplish.

That's why I asked the client what they
were actually trying to achieve.

Sometimes hybrid is exactly the right word.

Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive,
for example, immediately tells us
that an engine and an electric motor
work together.

The context explains the hybrid.

Other times, "hybrid" just means compromise.

Ask anyone who's tried a hybrid bicycle built
for both road and trail. It may do both
reasonably well, but it rarely excels at either.

So whenever someone tells me they have
a hybrid solution, my first question is
always the same:

A hybrid of what?

Because sometimes you get Prius.
Sometimes you get a mule.

Words don't become meaningful just
because they're fashionable.

Context gives them value.

ハーフパンツはどうなんだろう。これはオフィス文化の話なのかも。

もちろん、会社でハーフパンツを履いてもいい企業もあると思う。

でも、ノーネクタイのクールビズは心理的にも受け入れやすかった一方で、ハーフパンツにはもう一つハードルがある気がする。

新しいクールビズが、ノーネクタイのように定着するのか、ちょっと興味があります。

ハーフパンツ（半ズボン）が夏の職場での仕事着として広がりつつある。アパレルメーカーが仕事用のハーフパンツを相次いで投入し、三陽商会では販売数量が計画を2割上回る。猛暑を受けて東京都庁がハーフパンツ着用.....
