[Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad]
is an upcoming action RPG set in the world of Aincrad, the floating castle from Sword Art Online. The game is part of the broader franchise created by Reki Kawahara.

•Concept:
Just like in the original story, players are trapped inside the virtual world and must climb the castle’s floors, defeat bosses, and survive the deadly game to escape.

•It’s a new RPG based on the Aincrad arc of the series.

During today's (February 20, 2026) "Casual Celebration" stream for the game's 9th anniversary, Square Enix confirmed NieR: Automata has sold 10 million copies. The video ended with the phrase:
"NieR: Automata to be continued..."
What’s Likely Happening
The "Small" Project: Producer Yosuke Saito previously warned fans to "not get too excited" and mentioned they were preparing "just a little something" for the 9th anniversary. This points toward a PS5/Switch 2 remaster or a final Anime/DLC project.
The "Big" Project: However, Geoff Keighley's immediate reposting of the teaser has fueled rumors of a major reveal at Summer Game Fest 2026 (June).
Yoko Taro's Status: Taro and Saito have confirmed they are working on a "new project" together, though they've been playfully vague about whether it's a direct NieR sequel.

Self-Published: For the first time, CC2 is handling everything—planning, development, and publishing—independently from Bandai Namco.
