✨ New Artist Spotlight ✨
We’re pleased to welcome a new artist, to The Kintsugi Labo JAPAN.
Rio Hashimoto, born in Shiga and based in Kyoto, holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Urushi lacquering from Kyoto City University of Arts (completed in 2025).
Her practice expands the expressive possibilities of urushi lacquer beyond tradition — from sculpture to video installation.
By embracing what is often excluded or overlooked, she challenges conventional notions of beauty and explores the subtle space between empathy and rejection in human perception.
Her latest Kintsugi-inspired artwork is currently on view at Artist Gate 2025 at A-LAB, Amagasaki city, a group exhibition celebrating emerging Japanese artists.
Through her work, she confronts "impurity," exploring the boundary between acceptance and rejection.
She aims to transform fleeting sensations of discomfort and repulsion into meaningful experiences that can bring about change within viewers.
