Join us for an enlightening discussion on Baltic humanist photography and its sociocultural parallels with post-war Japan. Explore how photographers from these
used their lenses to capture the essence of everyday life, blending artistic expression with poignant social commentary. Curators will unfold the untold narratives of the Baltic States and Japan, revealing how both regions navigated their unique historical transformations through the universal language of photography.

アーティスト紹介 / Artists's Introduction

アルノ・サール（1953-2022）
エストニア出身。
彼の代表作は、膨大な数のエストニアのパンクたちの写真だ。ソビエト社会において、パンクの写真を撮ることは様々な禁止事項に抵触している。というのも、バンド、音楽、文学、ライフスタイルは、検閲局グラブリットやKGBによって禁止されるか、管理されていたからである。禁止されていたパンクそれ自体もだが、サールはパンクたちの奇抜な外見や服装に魅了された。とはいえ、サールもいつも当局から逃れられたわけではなかった。例えば、一度でも彼らがフィルムの存在を暴き出すと、サールは何度もKGBに連行され、尋問や嫌がらせを受けることとなった。当局は写真の存在それ自体を望まなかったが、彼はエストニアにおけるこのサブカルチャーの存在を撮影することの重要性をよく理解していた。たとえそれがただの記録だったとしても、写真がなければこのパンクというムーブメントも実在しないのと同じことなのだ。写真が残されなければ、パンク自体がエストニアになかったことにされてしまう可能性もあっただろう。本展では彼のパンク写真から選りすぐりのものを展示している。

Arno Saar（1953-2022）
He's from Esonia.
He is most known for his immense work on the Estonian punk scene. Those who took photos of punks would eventually have to deal with the censorship that was enforced in Soviet society. Fringe bands, music, literature, and lifestyles were banned or controlled by the Glavlit or KGB. Despite these prohibitions, Saar was fascinated by the extraordinary appearance and clothes of punks, who were visually intriguing subjects. Arno Saar was not always successful in evading the authorities; once, Soviet militiamen exposed his films to light, and on many other occasions he was questioned by the KGB or harassed by its officers. The authorities did not wish for these photographs to exist, but Arno Saar understood the importance of recording the life of this subculture in Estonia, even just by chronicling them. He believed that the existence of these images would make it impossible to distort history. In this exhibition, a selection of Saar’s photos of punks is presented.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘?
バルト三国で起きたヒューマニスト写真運動とは？

第二次世界大戦の影響で起こったヒューマニスト写真運動は、一人一人の人間性の重要さに光を当て、平和を推進してきました。バルト三国に生きたヒューマニスト写真家達は、厳しい国家検閲やグローバルな視点に対する敵意に晒されながらも、視覚的な比喩や、隠れメッセージ、「イソップ言語（検閲を逃れるための特殊なコミュニケーション言語）」などを用いながら、人々を照らし制約に挑戦していきました。
写真家の視点を通して、ソ連時代を生きたバルト三国の人々のリアルな姿を感じながら、人生の力強さ、優美さ、複雑さをご覧ください。

The Humanist Photography movement, which arose in the aftermath of World War II, highlighted the importance of individual humanity and promoted peace. Humanist photographers in the Baltic States, despite facing strict national censorship and hostility towards global perspectives, used visual metaphors, hidden messages, and “Aesopian language” (a special communication language to evade censorship) to challenge constraints and illuminate people.

Through the lens of photographers, experience the real faces of the people living in the Baltic States during the Soviet era, and witness the strength, grace, and complexity of life.

𝙆𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝!

We will hold the first-ever Baltic Three Countries photo exhibition in Aoyama Spiral, Japan.

Previously overlooked, post-war Baltic photographic expressions will be showcased with a total of 17 artists and approximately 200 legendary works exhibited for this event.

The curator, Agnė Narušytė from Lithuania, will be welcomed, and the exhibition will be held with the cooperation of the Lithuanian Council of Culture, and the Baltic Culture Fund and others.

May 27-28 will be VIP invitation and press-only days. Additionally, further information about talk events and app launches will be announced later.

日本初のバルト3国写真展を青山スパイラルにて開催します。

これまで注目されてこなかった戦後バルト写真表現ですが、本展にあわせて総勢17名、約200点の伝説的な作品群が展示されます。

キュレーターにはリトアニアのAgnė Narušytė：アグネ・ナルシンテを迎え、リトアニア文化評議会、バルト文化財団など協力のもと開催されます。

5/27-28はVIP招待および報道関係者のみ招待dayです。そのほか、トークイベントやアプリのローンチなど、追って情報公開していきます。
