Artists: Bouillon Group, Thea Djordjadze, Nikoloz Lutidze, Gela Patashuri with Ei Arakawa and Sergei Tcherepnin, Gio Sumbadze Commissioner: Marine Mizandari, First Deputy Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia Curator: Joanna Warsza The Pavilion of Georgia at the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia will be a parasitic extension to an old building in the Arsenale in the form of a "Kamikaze Loggia" designed by the artist Gio Sumbadze. It will host an exhibition of Bouillon Group, Thea Djordjadze, Nikoloz Lutidze, Gela Patashuri with Ei Arakawa and Sergei Tcherepnin, and Gio Sumbadze. The vernacular architecture called "kamikaze loggia" has been created in Tbilisi since the 1990s as a response to the "lawless" times after the fall of the Soviet Union. The performative exhibition of the same name casts a critical look at the social, political and ideological discourses of the last twenty years in Georgia as well as the condition of contemporary art and architecture within it — thus introducing an artistic scene of a country that sometimes is described as “Italy gone Marxist”. Artistic Advisor: Nana Kipiani Assistant Curator: Sandra Teitge Project Managers: Gvantsa Turmanidze with Nino Bezarashvili and Anna Asatiani Production & Architecture: M+B Studio Srl Press contact: Denhart v. Harling, [email protected] Supported and funded by the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.

ARTINFO'S VENICE REPORT: Five Can’t Miss Pavilions in the Arsenale

If you’ve made it through Masimiliano Gioni’s 156-artist “Encyclopedic Palace” and still have a hankering for more, the Arsenale’s wide selection of national pavilions won’t fail to disappoint.

Wonderland is Everywhere Art Biennale Part 1 - News & Stories at STYLEPARK

Love this. Thank you, Thomas Wagner!

“Anyone finding (rightly or wrongly) all of this all too artistic, too bombastic, too banal or simply over-hyped, should head for the Danish Pavilion or the “Kamikaze Loggia”, as the newly established Georgian Pavilion at the end of the Arsenale grounds calls itself. The wooden house and its staircase hang like an illegal informal settlement over the former naval exit from the harbor. Inside, not only is light shed on urban life in Tbilisi between ‘Façadism’ and ‘Singapoisation’, but the artists from the Bouillon Group, Thea Djordjadze, Nikoloz Lutidze, Gela Patashuri and Gio Sumbadze poke fun at many other Georgian idiosyncrasies, until you laugh even at utterly absurd and tragic occurrences. Possibly this is the only way to bring criticism to bear in a world that has morphed into Absurdistan, and not just in a country whose inhabitants call it an Italy gone Marxist.”

Wonderland is Everywhere Art Biennale Part 1 - The art world is changing ever more swiftly. For the most part the country pavilions at the 55th Art Biennale in Venice hardly staged much more than opinions. Yet there were a few exceptions.

ARTonAIR:
“’Kamikaze Loggia’ is the title of (former USSR state) Georgia’s first participation in the Venice Biennial. Julia Draganović meets Joanna Warsza in the artist-built ‘loggia’, where the ephemeral material of walls and ceilings is turned into amplifiers for a pirate radio station broadcasting poetry about construction workers.”

"Wonderfully provisional Georgian Pavilion:)" Quinn Latimer

National pavilions can come in all different forms—naturally. Consider, for example, my first night in Venice, where I found myself at a grand palazzo for a dinner collectively hosted by Sadie Coles, representing England; Jose Kuri and Monica Manzutto, representing Mexico; and Gavin Brown and Barbar...
