VEDA

VEDA VEDA is a contemporary art gallery. VEDA started its activity as a project space in May 2016, in Florence.

The project’s founding proposition was to give invited artists the opportunity to confront their artistic practice within the atypical architecture of the space, challenging them to overcome the intrinsic conditions of a non-accessible space, with no floor beneath the street level, visible 24/7. Following the need to pursue a deeper dialogue with the artists’ practices, VEDA decided to become an art gallery a year later.

With the title AMONG THE INVISIBLE JOINS, Museion presents over 150 works by more than 80 artists from one of the most visionary and significant private collections of international contemporary art in Italy: the Enea Righi Collection. Thanks to a long-lasting relationship of trust, this collection has shaped Museion’s research into transdisciplinary, poetic and socio-political artistic practices for over a decade. The exhibition presents a wide range of artworks, architectural projects and artist’s books by renowned international artists such as Massimo Bartolini, Alighiero Boetti, Anna Boghiguian, Trisha Donnelly, Theaster Gates, Nan Goldin, Marisa Merz, Walid Raad, Franz Erhard Walther, Lawrence Weiner, Akram Zaatari and many others. The exceptional nature of the exhibition is underlined by the occupation of the entire building and the first exhibition of some recent acquisitions from the Enea Righi Collection, including works by Sonia Boyce, Roni Horn and Ser Serpas.

We're honoured to announce Dominique White's first presentation of Deadweight, the new body of work developed during a six-month residency organised by Collezione Maramotti in Italy, in conjunction with her awarding of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.
The exhibition will open on July 2nd at Whitechapel Gallery and will be on view until September 15th.

Dominique White: Deadweight

A thought-provoking exploration of rebellion and transformation, Deadweight features four large-scale sculptural works which reflect the artist’s deep connection with the sea and enduring fascination with shipwrecks. Combining force and fragility, the sharp angular structures evoke material forms: anchors, a ship’s hull, the carcass of an unknown mammal, which, through White’s treatment, become symbols of defiance.

The title Deadweight derives from a nautical term which collapses everything on a ship into a single unit which determines the ship’s ability to float and function as intended. White deliberately inverts this, offering disruption as opposed to stability – a reckoning with the tipping point of the ship to offer the possibility of emancipation through abolition.

As part of the process, the sculptures were immersed in the Mediterranean Sea: both a physical and poetic gesture to explore the transformative effect of water on material objects. The resulting forms display the rust and oxidation of the metals, the fragmentation of organic elements, such as sisal, raffia and driftwood, as well as carrying the lingering scent of seawater.

Central to White’s artistic philosophy is the concept of Afro-futurism, reimagined not as traditional utopian science fiction, but as a bold envisioning of a future liberated from capitalist and colonial influence. Her work envisions an Afro-future empowered by the sea’s boundless expanse to offer fluid, rebellious realities.
