L'Associazione Internazionale Mosaicisti Contemporanei nasce a Ravenna nel 1980 durante due giornate di studio sul mosaico contemporaneo per volontà della Professoressa Isotta Fiorentini, di Peter Fisher (1922-2000) e di altri mosaicisti e studiosi provenienti oltre che da Ravenna da diversi paesi del mondo. L’idea fu sostenuta dall’As
sessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Ravenna. Isotta Fiorentini, anima storica dell’Associazione, racconta che inizialmente per conoscere e contattare artisti mosaicisti di altri paesi fu determinante l’aiuto di Peter Fisher, giornalista e critico d’arte che in quegli anni frequentava assiduamente il laboratorio di Renato e Carlo Signorini a Ravenna. Di nazionalità tedesca, risiedeva a Londra dal 1956 e considerava Ravenna la sua città, la più amata, e vi ritornava ogni anno. Sosteneva che il mosaico è grande arte ed è un’arte senza tempo. Credeva ardentemente nel mosaico quale mezzo di espressione artistica del nostro tempo, proprio per l’intrinseca natura di poter fare uso di un pluralismo stilistico, caratteristico della nostra epoca. Dalla sua nascita l’aimc è stata sempre attiva con congressi, mostre e pubblicazioni per promuovere il mosaico contemporaneo in tutto il mondo. L’Associazione ha organizzato Congressi Internazionali a Trier in Germania con l’Università di Lettere, a Lou La Neuve in Belgio con la facoltà di Architettura, a San Pietroburgo in Russia con l’Accademia di Belle Arti, a Kamakura in Giappone con l’università statale di Belle Arti e Musica di Tokyo, ad Alessandria d’Egitto con la Facoltà di Belle Arti, a Ravenna in Italia con la Facoltà di Conservazione dei Beni Culturali dell'Università di Bologna, a Vitòria in Brasile con l'Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo, a Melbourne in Australia con la ACU National University e la Australian Multicultural Foundation, in Macedonia con il Museo dell’ Arte Moderna e patrocinato dall’ UNESCO, nel 2008 a Gaziantep in Turchia in collaborazione con il Museo Zeugma, 2010 ad Atene, 2012 a Cipro. Un evento di particolare importanza c’è stato nel 1987 quando l’aimc realizza a Ravenna una grande opera pubblica denominata MOSAICO DI AMICIZIA FRA I POPOLI – PARCO DELLA PACE. Si tratta di un’esposizione permanente all’aperto di opere musive di artisti contemporanei di molti paesi. L’Associazione non ha scopo di lucro e si propone di promuovere e coordinare i contatti fra gli operatori nel campo del mosaico. Possono essere soci le persone fisiche o giuridiche che operano direttamente o indirettamente nel settore del mosaico, dell’arte in generale, studiosi e simpatizzanti. Attualmente è Presidente dell'Associazione il mosaicista Nikos Tolis di Atene.

The AIMC (L'Associazione Internazionale Mosaicisti Contemporanei / International Association of Contemporary Mosaicists) was founded in Ravenna in 1980. The idea for an association grew out of a two day study session on contemporary mosaic, and it became a reality through the efforts of Professor Isotta Fiorentini, Peter Fisher (1922-2000) and many Italian and international mosaicists and scholars. The idea was given official support by the Cultural Commission of the Municipality of Ravenna. Isotta Fiorentini, the original heart and soul of the association, recounts how Peter Fisher, a journalist and art critic who frequently visited the studio of Renato and Carlo Signorini during those years, was instrumental in identifying and contacting mosaicists from around the world. Although German by nationality and a resident of London since 1956, Fisher considered Ravenna his beloved city and he spent time there every year. He maintained that mosaic is a timeless, profound art, yet strongly believed in mosaic as an appropriate means of artistic expression for our age, due to its intrinsic nature which makes use of a stylistic pluralism. Since its beginning, the AIMC has regularly held conferences, mounted exhibitions and created publications to promote contemporary mosaics throughout the world. The association has organized international conferences in: Trier (Germany) with the Department of Arts; Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) with the Department of Architecture; St. Petersburg (Russia) with the Academy of Fine Arts; Kamakura (Japan) with the State University of Fine Arts and Music of Tokyo; Alexandria (Egypt) with the Department of Fine Arts; Ravenna (Italy) with the Department of Cultural Heritage and Preservation of the University of Bologna; Vitoria (Brazil) with the Federal University of Espirito Santo; Melbourne (Australia) with the ACU National University and the Australian Multicultural Foundation; Macedonia with the Modern Art Museum and the sponsorship of UNESCO; Gaziantep (Turkey) in 2008 in collaboration with the Zeugma Museum, 2010 conference in Athens; 2012 conference in Cyprus. Of particular importance is the creation in 1987 of a large public work of art, the Mosaic of Friendship among Peoples—the Peace Park. This is a permanent exhibition of contemporary mosaic artworks created by international and Italian artists; it is an open-air mosaic museum, the only one of its kind.
