Il Museo dell’Antica Grancia e dell’Olio di Serre di Rapolano documenta la storia delle antiche fattorie fortificate (le grance), appartenenti fin dal XIV secolo all’Ospedale senese di Santa Maria della Scala. Le grance furono costruite per amministrare i numerosi terreni che i fedeli lasciavano in eredità all’ospedale
e per conservare il raccolto agricolo prima di trasportarlo a Siena, dove era poi usato a fini caritatevoli. La necessità di stoccaggio di grandi quantità di prodotti spiega la complessità della struttura architettonica di questi edifici che avevano al proprio interno granai, tinai, cantine, frantoi e una serie di spazi necessari per la trasformazione e la conservazione di grano, vino e olio. La Grancia di Serre, risalente al Duecento, era un centro di produzione agraria locale capace di assicurare parte dei beni alimentari per l’ospedale senese. Questa molteplicità di funzioni si rispecchia nel percorso articolato del museo: qui, infatti – attraverso strumenti antichi, immagini fotografiche e documenti – si riannodano simbolicamente i fili di un lungo tratto della storia della comunità di Rapolano e Serre, ma anche di tutta la provincia senese. The Museum of Ancient Grancia and Oil of Serre di Rapolano documents the history of the ancient fortified farms (the grance), belonging since the fourteenth century to the Sienese hospital of Santa Maria della Scala. The grance were built to administer the numerous lands that the faithful left as an inheritance to the hospital and to conserve the agricultural harvest before transporting it to Siena, where it was then used for charitable purposes. The need for storage of large quantities of products explains the complexity of the architectural structure of these buildings which had inside granaries, vats, cellars, oil mills and a series of spaces necessary for the transformation and storage of grain, wine and oil. La Grancia di Serre, dating back to the thirteenth century, was a center of local agricultural production capable of ensuring part of the food for the Sienese hospital. This multiplicity of functions is reflected in the articulated path of the museum: here, in fact - through ancient tools, photographic images and documents - the threads of a long stretch of the history of the community of Rapolano and Serre, but also of the entire Sienese province, are symbolically re-tied.
