The Vatican Pietà, sculpted for the French cardinal Jean de Bilhères, is a miracle of marble carving: we all know that, and so did Michelangelo! For the first and only time, in fact, the sculptor, in a surprising act of vanity, decided to sign his work.
The sash that runs across Mary’s chest was ingraved with name, last name and even city of origin of the artist.
