FN Souza | Untitled | 11x8.2 Inch | Marker on Paper | 1994

Inquiry: [email protected]

Francis Newton Souza was born in 1924 in Saligao, Goa. After losing his father at a very young age and being afflicted by a serious bout of small pox, he vowed to go about life his own way. Souza was expelled for participating in the Quit India Movement while studying at the Sir J J School of Art in Mumbai. In 1947, he founded the Progressive Artists' Group along with S H Raza, M F Husain and K H Ara, among others. An articulate genius, Souza augmented his disturbing and powerful canvases with his sharp and provocative prose.

Francis Newton Souza's unrestrained and graphic style created thought-provoking and powerful images. His repertoire of subjects covered still life, landscape, nudes and icons of Christianity, rendered boldly in a frenzied distortion of form. Souza's paintings expressed defiance and impatience with convention and with the banality of everyday life. Souza's works have reflected the influence of various schools of art: the folk art of his native Goa, the full-blooded paintings of the Renaissance, the religious fervour of the Catholic Church, the landscapes of 18th and 19th century Europe, and the path-breaking paintings of the moderns. A recurrent theme in his works was the conflict in a man-woman relationship, with an emphasis on sexual tension and friction. In his drawings, he used line with economy, while still managing to capture fine detail in his forms. He also used a profusion of crosshatched strokes that made up the overall structure of his subject.

Krishen Khanna | 5.25x9.25 Inch | Charcoal & Color Pencil on Paper

Inquiry: [email protected]

Born in 1925 in what is now Faislabad in Pakistan, Krishen Khanna grew up in Lahore, only studying art after he graduated from college at evening classes held at the Mayo School of Art there. In 1947, Khanna’s family moved to Shimla as a result of the Partition of India and Pakistan, and Khanna was deeply affected by not only the change in his personal life, but also the socio-political chaos that reigned around him. His early works are reproductions of the scenes that were indelibly imprinted in his memory during this period.

Most of Khanna’s work is figurative; he chose to not explore the abstraction that most of his contemporaries were delving into. In an interview with Saffronart he said “I used to do abstracts earlier and I have now moved on to human forms. I thought that the person or the individual is being neglected – the person in a particular situation who is influenced by the conditions around. I want to now emphasise the human beings caught up in their particular condition.”

Himmat Shah | Untitled | 23.5x9.75x9 Inch
Inquiry: [email protected]

Himmat Shah was born in 1933 at Lothal in Gujarat. After initially training as a drawing teacher, he studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of M.S. University, Baroda, from 1956 to 1960. He was a National Cultural Scholar in 1956, and received a French Government scholarship to study etching at Atelier 17, Paris in 1967.

Shah was a member of Group 1890, a short-lived artists’ collective founded by J. Swaminathan. The then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, opened the group’s first and only show in 1963. The group dispersed soon after, and each of its members, including Shah, continued their artistic practices with their own agendas.

Shah’s predilection for drawing was natural. Being an inexpensive, transformative and free form of expression, it appealed to him in his negotiations with form and space. If one looks at his early drawings closely, one discovers the skill behind the chaotic black lines. These works are never predictable, and deeply ironic in the manner in which they use a simple medium to interpret complex contemporary visual fields.

From 1967 to 1971, Himmat Shah designed and executed monumental murals in brick, cement and concrete at St. Xavier's School Ahmedabad. Since then, he started working on relief and sculpture in plaster, terracotta and ceramics. Shah’s sculptures in bronze and terracotta explore materiality, texture and the various ways in which reality can be presented. They internalize the built-in obsolescence of consumerist society. His gilded objects of clay have the traces of paintings on them and there are unreadable hieroglyphs gouged into his series of metal heads. These are self-mocking elements, speaking of age and decay.

Sudhir Bhagat | Me-Time | 46x36 Inch | Oil on Canvas

Born in New Delhi in 1964, Sudhir Bhagat graduated with a BFA from Delhi College of Art in 1985. With over 20 years of experience as a designer and creative director, Bhagat has worked on several iconic advertising campaigns for National Geographic, Panasonic and Yamaha, among others.

As an artist, Bhagat works primarily with oil and acrylic on canvas, but has also experimented with installations and digital art. Bhagat’s works are easily identified by the unique palette of colours that he uses to depict his figures. His vibrant, fluid brushstrokes create a refreshing sharpness that is characteristic to all his artworks. Bhagat also utilizes mythic symbolism to create dream worlds that allow the viewer to shift into a colourful and futuristic imaginary world. In his efforts to leave behind a body of work that brings the viewer joy, the artist imbues his canvas with a sense of drama portrayed through an intelligent gradation of colours and fluid, abstract compositions. Bhagat works and lives in New Delhi.
