In continuation with the shawl we saw yesterday, we present to you -

SHIKARGAH

Shawl, in Zari & Pashmina made in complementary twill weave (tapestry technique / kani weaving)

Designed by Waseem Ahmed & Created by Atiq Ahmed

Ganderbal in Srinagar, Kashmir (2022 )

This shawl took two years to weave, and carries the enduring theme of the Shikargah — scenes of the royal hunt which appear in Persian and Mughal paintings and textiles.
It has been woven by a third generation artist, who is also an expert in the refurbishing, re-designing and restoration of antique pashmina shawls.
The use of metallic yarn with the pashmina to create the kind of intricate patterns as are seen here is not common in the tradition of kani weaving from Kashmir.

Watch this space for another exquisite piece from Kashmir currently displayed at the Sutr Santati - then. now. next.

Udhbhava ( Birth) : is constantly exploring materials that are connected to handcraft. He works primarily with natural indigo pigment on Khadi textiles, handloom textiles, paper and canvas.  He states that ‘Indigo for me is like Vibuthi or Kumkuma, a spiritual pigment which represents a deep meditative space and has no form.’

With his work he explores the realm of raw energy: movement, patterns, textures and decay in nature—an inherent vibration that is omnipresent and ever-evolving.

Kantilo Stambh

Kansa, a unique alloy of copper and tin, is a revered form of metalworking practised in India for centuries - the Nilamadhaba Temple to Lord Neela Madhab in Odisha forms a prominent site of the craft.
The Kantilo Stambh, is a reinvention of Anish Kapoor’s ‘Taratantara’ work. Contrasting the evenly-beaten exterior, its hidden golden elliptical ends grab attention, countering the parent form’s monotones.
Artisan: Zameer Ahmed

“The exhibition ‘Sustain: The Craft Idiom’ is a specially curated cultural project for the 2nd G20 CWG meeting (May 14 to 17, 2023) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The theme of the exhibition is predicated on and reflective of the second priority of the Culture Working Group (CWG) - ‘Harnessing Living Heritage for a Sustainable Future.’ The exhibition was held at Kala Bhoomi - Odisha Crafts Museum from the 16-22 May 2023.‘ Sustain: The Craft Idiom’ is composed of three constituent experiences - Akshara, Stambh and demonstrations by master artisans and teachers.”

Copper Damroo Stambh

Copperware craft was traditionally used in vessels and musical instruments, given its health benefits. For copper objects, the base is first created and later subjected to heat in a kiln, to soften the metal, enabling moulding. It is then beaten into the required form, with
individual pieces are later fused.
The Copper Damroo Stambh is a composite of four individual copper perch stools. The lean centre of the stools radiates outwards to form bulbous edges, appearing as protruding
‘kaan’ (ears).

Samaya Kerala Stambh

Like most metalcraft, brass craftsmanship goes back several millennia in India, and is widely used to for cookware, figurines and objects. The craft involves melting the alloy of copper and zinc in a foundry.
The Samaya Kerala Stambh presents a traditional function – the deepmala – in a contemporary format. The stambh is a tall structure inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s work.

White Metal Patrawork Stambh

Metalwork has been used for functional and decorative pieces - jewelry, objects and utensils - in India over millennia. In the White Metal Patrawork craft, a shaped piece of wood is clad with silver sheets embossed with desired motifs and hammered onto the surface.
The White Metal Patrawork Stambh is
composed of four silver-clad metal stools
and central spheres with a textured and
hammered look, on whose either side are base plates. A central stainless steel rod holds the assemblage, an example of Rajasthani crafts skills, in place.

Moonshadow Longpi Stambh

Attributed to Goddess Panthobi, the Manipur Pottery tradition is most famously practised in Longpi village of the state’s Ukhrul District.
Unusual for not relying on a potter’s wheel, the craft combines ‘Humnali’, a special clay, with black serpentinite stone, in a 3:2 ratio. The mixture is shaped by hand, before being placed
in a kiln for between five to nine hours.
The Moonshadow Longpi Stambh extends this traditional craft with size, through a trio of vases that stack vertically.

Multi-ball Brass Stambh

Like most metalcraft, brass craftsmanship goes back
several millennia in India, and is widely used to for cookware, figurines and objects. The craft involves melting the alloy of copper and zinc in a foundry.
The Multi-ball Brass Stambh is crafted from hand-beaten brass, and standing at five feet, is reminiscent of the moons. Its solid structure showcases the skill of its makers, the gleaming brass finish adding
timeless elegance.
