On the occasion of the 87th Foundation Day of the Assam State Museum, an open State-Level Quiz Competition on “Cultural Heritage of Assam and the Assam State Museum” was organised, witnessing enthusiastic participation from students and heritage enthusiasts across the state. The quiz was conducted by Shri Dilip Kumar Sharma. The competition served as an engaging platform to promote awareness and appreciation of Assam’s rich cultural legacy, while encouraging participants to deepen their knowledge of the Museum and its collections.

A total of 16 teams participated in the competition. The winners are:

1. First Prize: Saroj Kumar Deka, Amiya Kumar Baruah
2. Second Prize: Pankaj Sarma, Bhargab Bhushan Viswapati
3. Third Prize: Rubul Kalita, Gopal Sarma

On the occasion of the 87th Foundation Day of the Assam State Museum, the Museum’s souvenir shop, “Kalakriti,” was formally inaugurated, marking a significant step towards enhancing visitor engagement and promoting the cultural heritage of Assam through curated merchandise. The initiative aims to extend the Museum experience beyond the galleries by offering thoughtfully designed products inspired by its rich collections. Visitors can now purchase various items like replicas of museum artefacts, t-shirts, tote bags and museum publications from the souvenir shop.

On the occasion of the 87th Foundation Day of the Assam State Museum, the catalogues of the District Museums of Barpeta, Dhubri, and Tezpur were formally inaugurated, showcasing their rich and diverse collections. The proceeding of the Two-Day International Conference held on the occasion of International Museum Day 2025 was also released, reflecting continued scholarly engagement in the field of museology and heritage studies by the Directorate.

The 87th Foundation Day of the Assam State Museum was celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour on 21 April 2026 at the Kanaklal Barua Auditorium of the Assam State Museum. As the state’s premier institution devoted to the preservation and promotion of its rich cultural heritage, the Museum commemorated the occasion with a thoughtfully-curated series of engaging and meaningful events.

A major highlight of the celebration was the 2nd Kanaklal Barua Memorial Lecture, delivered by eminent historian and former Vice Chancellor of the Majuli University of Culture, Majuli Prof.Dambarudhar Nath on the theme, “Interpreting Archaeology: Linguistic and Historical Significance of a Few Epigraphic Preserves from Early Assam.” The lecture provided profound insights into the historical narratives of Assam, drawing upon significant epigraphic sources such as the inscriptions from Ambari, Gachtal, and Kanoi Barosi Buwa, and emphasized their vital role in reconstructing and understanding the region’s past.

Participating as the chief guest, Prof. Arupjyoti Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of Madhabdev University, Narayanpur recalled the contributions of the founding fathers of the Assam State Museum and lauded the Museum for organising the programme in a meaningful manner.

Shri Ranjan Sharma, State Election Commissioner, Assam in his speech congratulated the Museum for its efforts to bring the Museum closer to the people.

Smt Sujata Suchibrata, Additional Secretary, Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department, Government of Assam, stressed the need to preserve and promote our rich cultural heritage.
