J Hill's Standard

J Hill's Standard Makers of handmade, unique and collectible objects in glass and other natural materials. HILL's Standard. J. All pieces of J.

We take our name from John Hill, an 18th Century glass alchemist and innovator. Hill was credited with revolutionising the production of cut crystal in Ireland and with setting a new standard of quality and material perfection. This legacy of innovation and commitment to creativity is honoured by J. It is the inspiration for our new and original collections of handmade Irish cut crystal. We work w

ith talented designers to create cut crystal objects that are honest, functional and beautiful. In our hands this centuries-old craft becomes vital and relevant once again. Hand-cut crystal is a craft synonymous with Ireland and, in particular, the area of Waterford. HILL's Standard makes full use of the extraordinary levels of skill in this region. HILL's Standard crystal are hand-cut in Waterford by two master craftsmen who between them have over a century of experience in the art of hand-cutting crystal. HILL's Standard was born from a desire to reinvigorate this fading industry. We aim to revive it through collaborations with talented designers and by working with international design and craft communities to bring Irish cut crystal back to the world stage.

A process that began over two years ago…
Documented in part here.

Together with Richard, we have developed The Misfits. Three cocktail glasses - sculptural, eccentric, fun.

The conical one.
The rounder one.
The squarer one.

In a limited edition of 150. (50 of each). Mouth blown in amber glass.

We were led in the development of the Misfits by Richard’s ability to play and to explore form. They are all invention; slightly weird, a new language for glass. Their character is a deliberate leaning in; to our own individual idiosyncrasies - our unique identities outside the mainstream.

Now available to shop through jhillsstandard.com - or via the link in our bio, The Misfits have landed.

A special thank you to Scott Benefield who gave us his skilled time to explore form and possibility in the Benefield Spencer workshop in North Antrim.

Intentionally unique, each carries the trace of the human hand. Each has a character, a sense of leaning, rest, or resistance. Small sculptures that contain a notion of devilment - an impulse to misbehave.

An edition of 50 of each: the conical one, the square one and the round one. In amber glass.

Available to buy through the website this Thursday, 16th April at 12:00 GMT.

Beautifully imagery by

Mouth blown in lead free crystal here in Ireland, before being brought up to the cutting wheel many hundreds of times to achieve the faceted cut effect. Available both polished and unpolished. This piece spends a great deal of time in very skilled hands.

On display with us at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen this month. 18-20th June 2025.

Runner Stones

New Launch at Matter and Shape, 2025.

Drawn by Nigel Peake and kiln cast in glass,
these pleasing pieces take their form from
the heavy circular stones, usually of sandstone or granite, dating back many thousands of years and once used for grinding grain.

The glass is melted into a mould at high temperatures and once annealed,
hand sculpted and worked to a smooth, reflective surface which gently reflects the candle light they so effectively hold.

Air and Thorn

These marks draw their energy from this place: sea bound and subject to regular mist. This ghostly fog blows inland from the cliffs and clings to the branches of the hardyblackthorn - its black boughs and sudden burst of creamy white blossom in April arestark and unforgettable.

Seen here in the vitrine in our Lismore studio.
