Exhibition at Tallaght Library: The Art of Stanislaw Gliwa

Courtesy of John Mullen, and launching on the 6th of May at 6.30, we will be exhibiting original artworks by Polish artist Stanisław Gliwa (1910-1986)

Gliwa was a Polish graphic artist, printer, and soldier. He studied graphic design and drawing, joining the artistic group 'Szczep Rogate Serce'. During World War II, he was interned in labour camps where he created numerous portraits of fellow prisoners and guards. Later, he joined General Anders' army (The Polish Army 1941-1942), continuing his artistic pursuits with portraits of soldiers and battle scenes. Gliwa's notable works include the graphic design for Melchior Wańkowicz's "The Battle of Monte Cassino," which garnered significant praise for its integration of visuals and text. After the war, Gliwa established his own printing house in London, "Oficyna Gliwa," producing nearly 40 publications, primarily Polish literature and poetry. He was recognised for his contributions to printing and book design, becoming a member of the London Chappel of Private Press Printers.

The lecture, on 'Queen Victoria's visit to Killarney in 1861 will be given by local historian Frank Tracy. This event is dedicated to the memory of Kieran Swords, late County Librarian for South Dublin County. Kieran was passionate about local history and indeed it is thanks to him that we have such a rich resource in the Local Studies Collection at the County Library in Tallaght. Kieran sadly passed away in 2015 and his huge loss is still greatly felt by all of us in South Dublin Libraries and in the wider community.
