On this day in 1987, Metallica released "The $5.98 E.P. Garage Days Re-Revisited." The 5-track EP was recorded in an effort to help break-in Jason Newsted, and ultimately get the band back on track after the tragic loss of Cliff Burton. You can tell that they must have had a lot of fun during the recording process, since it's comprised almost entirely of NWOBHM covers that were largely influential on the band's early musical direction (one exception being Last Caress/Green Hell, which gave an appropriate nod to The Misfits). The band was also kind enough to include the suggested retail price in the title, and the original cassette even included a sticker that read "If they try to charge more, STEAL IT!" Irrespective of anything else, Garage Days served as a great reminder that despite Cliff Burton's untimely death, the band was very much alive and well.
