A recent restoration project on a historic ÉIRE sign in Wexford is set to be protected under the Register of Monuments.

A group of dedicated Wexford volunteers has uncovered and begun restoring a long-lost ÉIRE sign at Cahore Point, one of a network of giant stone markers built during World War II to alert Allied pilots they were flying over neutral Ireland. These signs, often placed along the coastline and made from large white stones spelling out "ÉIRE" (Irish for "Ireland"), were visible from the air and formed part of a broader effort to ensure Ireland's neutrality was respected during wartime air patrols.

The Cahore Point sign, marked with the number 11, had been buried and forgotten for decades until work began in 2020 to uncover it. Led by Sean O’Brien and supported by members of Kilmuckridge Macra na Feirme, volunteers have now fully unearthed the "IRE" section and are working to restore the collapsed "E". They also began revealing the number “11” further down the slope.
