Today, we find ourselves in a political climate that we thought was long gone: the intrusion of the military upon our civil space, the shrinking freedom of expression, and the state’s continual denial of the history of violence against Chinese-Indonesians.

Pistols, butterflies, a greedy human figure, crowns of thorns appear in diverse variations as responses to a contemporary political landscape that feels familiar to the past while becoming increasingly complex.

Opening on 24 September 2026, delve into how FX Harsono reconfigures and transforms these familiar symbols into new forms and meanings, creating a space where history transcends temporal boundaries.

BAIK Jakarta is pleased to present Ambang / Threshold, a solo exhibition by FX Harsono FX Harsono conveying the constant in-between situation of the Chinese-Indonesian community: caught between “children of the soil” and “strangers”; “accepted” yet “suspected”.

In Ambang / Threshold, Harsono revisits the icons, symbols, and metaphors recurred in his works from the 1970s, engaging them through new approaches with meanings that remain relevant. Harsono’s iconic imagery and objects, including pistols, Chinese-Indonesian archives, and the crown of thorns are transformed and rearranged to address the current sociopolitical situation in Indonesia which in his view is remarkably similar to what he observed during the New Order era (1966-1998).

Ambang / Threshold is an exploration of identity, memory, and violence across various modes of artistic presentation, from medium transposition to ornamentations. In this exhibition, Harsono presents a compelling body of work that could be regarded as the culmination of his artistic practice thus far, further affirming his seminal stature within the landscape of Indonesian contemporary art.

8월 31일부터 9월 10일까지, 서울 곳곳에 Ryan Gander가 디자인한 코인이 숨겨집니다. ‘Pause / Action’, ‘Solo / Together’, ‘Speak / Listen’ 중 하나의 문구가 새겨진 코인을 발견했다면 자유롭게 소장해 보세요.

《The Find Seoul》은 일상 속 우연한 발견을 통해 잠시 걸음을 멈추고, 나와 주변의 관계를 돌아보는 경험을 제안합니다. 도시 곳곳에 놓인 작은 코인이 일상과 예술을 연결하는 매개가 됩니다.

BAIK is participating in Ryan Gander’s public art project, The Find Seoul, which takes place during Frieze Seoul week.

From August 31 to September 10, coins designed by Ryan Gander will be hidden throughout Seoul. Each coin features one of three pairs of words: ‘Pause / Action,’ ‘Solo / Together,’ or ‘Speak / Listen.’ If you happen to find one, it’s yours to keep.

The Find Seoul invites us to pause amidst everyday life and reflect on our relationship with ourselves and our surroundings through an unexpected encounter. These small coins become a bridge between art and everyday life, connecting people and the city through chance discovery.

During Frieze week, keep an eye out for a coin at BAIK, too.
Where it might be hidden is yours to discover.

백아트(BAIK)는 멜라 야르스마(Mella Jaarsma)의 개인전 《나의 숨결, 나무로 돌아가다: My Breath Returns to the Tree》의 퍼포먼스 프로젝트에 참여할 참여자를 모집합니다.

이번 퍼포먼스는 인간과 자연, 신체와 환경의 관계를 탐구해 온 멜라 야르스마의 작업으로, 퍼포머의 몸을 ’살아 있는 조각‘으로 만들어 가는 프로젝트입니다. 새로운 예술적 경험에 관심 있는 분들의 많은 지원을 바랍니다.
