On June 6, GuWei Museum held the opening of "Spirit & Motion," a solo exhibition by Andrew HY Cheung. His latest exceptionally long handscroll masterpiece, ‘’Suchness”, stands as a centrepiece of the exhibition, drawing numerous visitors to admire its intricate details.

Measuring 1580 cm × 72 cm, “Suchness” follows the great tradition of Chinese handscrolls. The work is inspired by a renowned verse from the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra (Diamond Sutra):

"All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows; like dew or a flash of lightning; thus should they be contemplated."

Structurally reminiscent of the classical masterpiece A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, the handscroll draws its content from the rich decorative patterns, caissons, sculptures, and murals from various periods in the Dunhuang Grottoes. The scroll opens with flying apsaras, guiding viewers on a journey through the evolution of cosmic life, gradually leading them into a dreamlike, ethereal realm where reality and illusion intertwine.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those who attended the opening ceremony, in particular, by:
Mr. Giulio Gubert, Deputy Consul-General of Italy in Hong Kong;
Ms. Lee Mei-yin, Visiting Research Fellow, Dunhuang Academy; Vice Chairman, Friends of Dunhuang (Hong Kong),

Dr. Eszter Csillag, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, HKBU; Mr. Francesco Vitali, Chairman of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong;

The exhibition runs until September 6, 2026.
We warmly welcome you to visit it at our museum

In the boundless wilderness of time spanning thousands of years, there is no such thing as being too early or too late. By chance, everything aligns. Initially, I longed to depict Buddhist images, which led me to the Apsaras of Dunhuang, and the intricate caisson ceiling patterns. Through copying, deconstructing, and recomposing these elements, l accumulated Dunhuang paintings.

【The ISF Academy (Primary School) Visits to the Exhibition The Wanli Shipwreck: Blue and White Porcelain in Global Trade】

From May 12 to 14, the GuWei Museum was delighted to welcome student tour groups and their families from The ISF Academy over three consecutive days. The students visited the "The Wanli Shipwreck: Blue and White Porcelain in Global Trade," exhibition. Guided by the docents' detailed introductions and by closely examining the motifs on the artifacts, they appreciated firsthand the pure, elegant beauty of blue-and-white porcelain, while gaining insights into its developmental history and relevant historical figures. Throughout the process, the students participated enthusiastically and asked active questions, showing a keen interest in learning more about the artistic features, history, and cultural background of blue-and-white porcelain.
Following the exhibition tour, they participated in a porcelain workshop at the GuWei Library Lounge, where they painted classic blue-and-white tones and patterns onto porcelain vases. Unleashing their creativity and applying their newly inspired knowledge, the students created beautiful artworks, each infused with their own unique personal style.
Through this three-in-one experience—combining the exhibition visit, the completion of educational worksheets, and the creative workshop—we deeply felt the students' rich understanding of and genuine interest in Chinese culture. The Guwei Museum is deeply committed to promoting "cultural education" and aims to serve as a meaningful venue for cultural learning outside the classroom. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the school and the teachers for supporting and making these arrangements possible.
