With summer just around the corner, the bright season unfolds, have you and your family already mapped out the perfect travel itinerary?

Whether you are packing your bags for a distant getaway or searching for a local cultural sanctuary to beat the heat and explore with the whole family, consider setting aside half an hour for Chamber of Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall at Lingnan University. ‘Fleeting, Fleeting Light—Imagery of Time in Chinese Art’ is now showing. We invite you to follow the perspective of a Lingnan student to discover an exhibit artwork for families to enjoy together. A whimsical yet auspicious jade piece——Jade flattened vase carried by a mythical beast:

After surviving the chaotic final exam month, or during a weekday lunch break, how long has it been since you truly slowed down to enjoy a quiet afternoon, free from the crowds and interruptions? ☕Here at Chamber of Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall at Lingnan University, we have reserved a peaceful, secluded corner just for you.
‘Fleeting, Fleeting Light—Imagery of Time in Chinese Art’ is now showing at CYS Hall. Today, we invite you to follow the perspective of another Lingnan student to decode a piece rich in ancient political metaphors—Blue-and-white circular dish with auspicious beasts:
🌼
‘The outermost rim of the porcelain dish is adorned with four five-clawed dragons, their heads and tails interlocking in an endless cycle. In Chinese traditional decorative art, such continuous patterns often symbolise the cyclical nature of time. The dynamic design of the four dragons circling the dish may well signify that the passage of time is ceaseless.
In stark contrast to the linear conception of time to which modern people are accustomed, the traditional Chinese view of time emphasises cyclicality. Perhaps, as the academic term draws to a close, we might visit Chamber of Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall to experience the richness and leisurely pace of time. ’

As spring arrives in full bloom, have you captured your own unique spring scenery somewhere in this beautiful season?
‘Fleeting, Fleeting Light—Imagery of Time in Chinese Art’ is now showing at CYS Hall. As explored in the exhibition, ancient people perceived time through the patterns of nature, transforming it into a vessel for human emotion. We've invited Lingnan students to help us ‘savour time’ through their unique everyday lenses:
🌿
‘It is now spring, and flowers are in bloom everywhere. This kind of beautiful scene can be found not only outdoors, but also on a dish in the gallery. This dish is rich in colour. At the centre of the dish are roses for spring, peonies for early summer, heavenly bamboo for autumn and winter, and narcissus for the transition from late winter to early spring. Flowers bloom at different times of the year, but this dish keeps the beauty of all four seasons together. I like the way it combines the passing of the seasons with auspicious wishes in an everyday object. The motifs of longevity stones, lingzhi fungi, and peach blossoms further add meanings of longevity, health, and good fortune. ’

What is time?

Time concepts take on different forms across various cultures. Reflections on time were never abstract alone, but tied to visions of the universe—and these ideas found visual expression in the arts.

The exhibition Fleeting, Fleeting Light—Imagery of Time in Chinese Art is curated by the Department of Digital Arts and Creative Industries at Lingnan University, and generously supported by loans of twenty-four precious antiquities and contemporary works from Chamber of Young Snow. The exhibition begins with ink paintings, porcelain, lacquer, and jade from the late Yuan (1271–1368) to the modern era, unfolding imagery of the seasons, landscapes, immortal realms, and the space. Through them, we glimpse how the Chinese conception of time was shaped, and how, when embodied in art, time became a vessel for feeling.

: Special Exhibition on the Exhortations to Promote Good Deeds by Empress Renxiao of the Great Ming

Discover the rare 1405 imperial edition of the Ming Dynasty and understand its crucial role in Ming moral education. This is the first public display of this rare carved edition, offering visitors deep insights into how the Ming imperial court used the publication of ethical texts to consolidate political legitimacy and promote social stability.

| Visitor Feedback:
"The vernacular explanations of the ancient text content were excellently done.
