wamono art and BUNDLE STUDIO held a special talk event to commemorate the screening of a documentary film about the “Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970” exhibition held at the Centre Pompidou in 1986.
Part 1 featured Aomi Okabe, one of the commissioners (curators) of the “Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970” exhibition, with art journalist Yoshio Suzuki serving as moderator.
The theme was “Exploring the Exhibition that Opened Japanese Avant-Garde Art to the World.”
The discussion delved into the behind-the-scenes story of how the legendary “Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970” exhibition came to be, and explored its impact on the art world that followed. Ms. Okabe also shared anecdotes from that time, including his interactions with participating artists and memorable events during the exhibition.
This was a unique opportunity to trace the trajectory of expression that has been passed down through generations, through the words of Aomi Okabe, who continues to work energetically on cross-border curation as an independent curator.
In the second part, we invited architect Noriaki Okabe, who was part of the design team for the Centre Pompidou and also designed the venue for the “Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970” exhibition, as our guest. The moderator of the talk was architect Kenichi Teramoto, who curated the UAE Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition and won the Golden Lion Award.
The theme was “From the Centre Pompidou Site: Considering Architecture as Exhibition Space.”
We were able to hear stories that only someone who has actually experienced museum architecture and the relationship between art and space can tell. Furthermore, through a dialogue between architects with extensive international experience, we explored the possibilities of architecture as a physical space that connects the past, present, and future.
