Brilliant news for Dover Castle.

👍 Huge thanks to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Culture Recovery Fund. Thanks to the fund, we can now carry out vital conservation work to cliff faces here at the Castle, and continue to be #HereForCulture.

And that's a wrap for our WWII interpretation of Operation Dynamo at Dover Castle for English Heritage - we've had so much fun over the past 11 weeks chatting with people about the evacuation of Dunkirk and commemorating the amazing feat of bringing back 338,000 military personnel in just 9 days.

While our socially distanced outdoor interpretation has come to an end at Audley End House and Gardens for the time being we were delighted to be back inside the kitchens today to celebrate the launch of English Heritage's recipe book How To Cook The Victorian Way.

[ID - two Victorian maids in cotton print dresses, aprons and caps at work, one greasing a black baking tin, the other stirring something in a mixing bowl, in a green painted period kitchen around a table filled with cooking paraphernalia including a scale, teacups and a teapot in a knitted purple cosy, a table filled with Victorian baked goods and jellies]

And that's a wrap for the socially distanced interpretation team at Audley End House and Gardens for the time being. Their work in challenging and unusual circumstances has been exceptional - especially interpreting a kitchen outdoors when interior spaces were closed!

We're still interpreting Operation Dynamo at Dover Castle for one more weekend and we'd love to see you there.

[ID - a team of servants in Victorian dress standing diagonally in front of a sunlit cream coloured period building, including a housekeeper in a black dress, wearing a white apron, gloves and carrying a white lace parasol, a cook wearing a red print dress, white half apron, cap and spectacles and three kitchen maids wearing pinafore aprons, cotton print dresses and caps]

This weekend is your last opportunity for a little while for socially distanced historical interpretation at Audley End House and Gardens with Mrs Crocombe and her team. Never fear though - our World War II team at Dover Castle will be there at weekends 'til the end of the month to thrill you with stories of Operation Dynamo!

It was an early start for us at Dover Castle yesterday as we there for filming - look how marvellous the castle looks in the morning light!

We had great fun working with Immediate Media Co. and English Heritage and look forward to sharing the results soon.

If you have a forthcoming historical filming or photography shoot for which you need costume or performers get in touch to see how we can help.

Since 1987, Past Pleasures has provided live costumed characters to heritage sites nationally for historical re-enactments, shows and interpretive scenarios.

We have worked with television and film companies, supplying both costume and actors/performers for documentaries and dramas.

Our education department works with school and museums to deliver historical education sessions by costumed interpreters working on a first or third person basis.

We also offer a training service for clients who wish to train their staff in the skills of historic interpretation - focussing on public speaking, character work, status and ettiquette, as well as using period language effectively.

Saw this and had to share. You cannot have closure for a button without a buttonhole. These embroidered buttonholes date to 1828. We need to bring this art back. These were part of a sewing sampler and you can see the entire work at
Superb at Dover Castle today, our favourite rendition of the story of King Vole we’ve seen you do 😊
We've seen Hunting and Harvest and Dover Castle a few times but today was still engaging and amazing 😊
About a year and a half ago, I was lucky to attend a Past Pleasures training event for Jersey Heritage. I just wanted to let Past Pleasures - and everybody else - know that I still appreciate it so much. It was a truly liberating experience for me that resounds to the present (and I hope beyond) both within my work for Jersey Heritage and in my personal music work (non-historical, I'm afraid.) I highly recommend Past Pleasures to anyone.
