Today marks 175 years since Windsor & Eton Central Station opened.

in 1849, the first train left for Slough at 8:05 am and there were 10 further departures that day, with the last leaving at 9:20pm. The journey time was 6 minutes – the same as today.

The day was a significant triumph for the town and followed a long battle for the railway to come to Windsor.

Come and visit our new exhibition to learn about the drama behind the railways coming to Windsor and learn why the town has two stations!

The National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to over 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and raises impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.

Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors have donated over £67 million to nursing and health charities and in 2022 made an annual donation of £3.11 million. The core beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

The National Garden Scheme doesn’t just open beautiful gardens for charity – they are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens too. They also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health and grant bursaries to help community gardening projects.

Windsor Bridge - 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Years old today!

Many visitors to Windsor don’t appreciate that the historic town of Eton – with its pretty high street and famous college – is situated just a stone’s throw from Windsor across the River Thames via Windsor Bridge.  Cross the bridge by foot or by biycle and you’ll be traversing a structure that has connected communities in Windsor and Eton for nearly a thousand years.  And the bridge, in its current design, is 200 years old today, 1 June 2024!

Windsor Bridge has also allowed people, trade, and ideas to flow into the area from further afield and acted as a travel route for successive royal courts. In doing so, it has been a backdrop to pivotal points in Britan’s history.

The current Windsor Bridge was built by the determination and hard labour of local people and for 200 years it's allowed generations to cross the river smoothly as they go about their everyday lives.

Today Windsor Bridge is the perfect place to stop and appreciate the gentle pace of life on the River Thames.  Book a riverside table at Côte Brasserie on the Eton side or Sir Christopher Wren Hotel on the Windsor side and watch the world go by.  Hire a boat from John Logie (Windsor) or Kris Cruisers (Datchet) and float beneath the bridge's arches for a unique perspective.  Thinking of getting engaged? Against the backdrop of the Castle, Windsor Bridge is a perfect spot for a wedding proposal! Or just stop for a moment and take a selfie or two – it's a special place.

➡️ Full Blog:
Click here to read our full Blog on the history of the bridge, kindly prepared by the staff of Windsor & Royal Borough Museum or ⬆️ head to the link in our Bio.

➡️ Exhibition:
If you're in Windsor today, head not only to the bridge but also to visit the special exhibition, at Windsor & Royal Borough Museum, where you'll be able to enjoy a series of fascinating display boards describing the life of the bridge.

Our thanks to all 🙏🏻

The bridge between Eton and Windsor was opened on 1st June 1824, making this the 200th anniversary year !

There has been a bridge over the Thames at this location ever since William the Conqueror first built his castle at Windsor. The current bridge was completed in 1824 and it is the oldest iron arch bridge still standing over the River Thames.

Interesting fact - For hundreds of years this was a toll bridge, and fees had to be paid to either cross it or sail under it.
