Historic Lifeboat Festival Wells

Historic Lifeboat Festival Wells A gathering of Historic Lifeboats in association with Rescue Wooden Boats, in the harbour at Wells-next-the-Sea, North Norfolk. Model lifeboats on display.

On the weekend of Sat 29th July, we are hosting the first Historic Lifeboat Festival in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk. We plan to have a parade of historic lifeboats parading down the channel towards the sea, arranged in order of age. The boats will be available to view at the new pontoon at Tug Boat Yard and there will also be a display of model lifeboats both here and at the local Library. Rescue Wooden Boats will have a stand too, with information and merchandise.

Wishing a magnificent 150th anniversary to Wells RNLI, a very special band of volunteers who welcomed me so warmly in the very first days of my journey.

The Norfolk charity, Rescue Wooden Boats, has a new project in mind. Not content with restoring Lucy Laver, a former lifeboat that took part in the Dunkirk 'Little Ships' evacuation, it now wants to get a former whelker, Bessie, back on the water. Bessie also took part in the rescue flotilla...

It's been one hell of a first week on the road, culminating in a glorious opportunity to photograph RNLB Lucy Lavers at Wells-next-the-Sea. She's a single screw 1939 Liverpool Class lifeboat, lovingly restored by Rescue Wooden Boats (rescuewoodenboats.com).

This glass plate is one of the most technically immaculate, entrancing and satisfying I've ever made. Seeing it appear in the fixer was simply thrilling. The plate induced all kinds of reactions from those involved ranging from hugs to watery eyes.

I'll look forward to sharing the context for making this photograph with you on my return later in the month. In the meantime, I've just rocked up at Filey ready for week two and my first foray along the Yorkshire coastline.

When I was very young, I used to be lifeboat-mad. In 1994, my schoolteacher, Mrs. Williams arranged for my artwork to be exhibited in the old boathouse at the bottom of Cromer Gangway, when it housed the HF Bailey. I was only about seven years old at the time! Now the old boats I remember drawing pictures of seem to have been consigned to the history books.
I did manage to find time to sneak down the Quay to see the boats on the Friday but everybody had clearly gone home, so couldn't get down on the pontoons to take a closer look. I did, however, manage to take one photo with all four boats in it!
So what events are happening for this historic lifeboat weekend? Times and what's happening would be great as I can't see a timetable or anything as to what happens when. Thank you

I will there in July with my model lifeboats
