To complement our current exhibition ‘ Home My Place in the world’ Jay Boodoo has sent us some info about what he brought with him when he migrated to the Uk in 1972. To find out more about Jays experience of migration visit his blog http://jayboodhoo.wordpress.com
My suitcase was packed with one half with clothes. May parents wanted to ensure that I was warm in England. I had lots of shirts and trousers made, a thick Jumper and 2 sets of the largest and warmest pyjamas.
The other half of the suitcase was packed with food. In 1972 when I came there were no restrictions on these, of if there were they did not check. In case I got hungry and to remind me of Mauritius my mother cooked a load of Farathas ( Rotis) and vegetable curry. She also put in there mango pickles and cabbage and carrot salad. She was right of course. I could not get used to the bland food here. So when the supply ran rout I was homesick, not just for family, but for hot and spicy food.

Huge congratulations to the winners of our Home: my Place in the World art competition! We had over 200 fantastic entries from school children in the borough and were really impressed with the range of creative responses to the theme of 'home. Well done to all who took part.
