Huge congratulations to our gallery artist Golnaz Afraz, who is the winner of the 2023 call for projects of the Fondation Villa Seurat in Paris.

Golnaz has been commissioned to create a monumental painting measuring 5 metres by 2 metres, on the theme of diversity, to be permanently exhibited in the Maison des étudiants de la Francophonie (hall of residence for students from French-speaking countries around the world) located on the Cité International Universitaire de Paris campus. Golnaz was selected by a jury composed of N’Goné Fall, Thierry Forien, Juliette Frescaline, Martin Kiefer and Sophie Nordmann after submitting a preliminary sketch and being shortlisted for interview.

I wish her all the best with her painting and will be sure to share it with you once it’s completed! You can see Golnaz’s work for yourself on the Gala Fine Art stand at London Art Fair from 20 to 24 April. Please subscribe to the mailing list (link in bio) for complimentary tickets.

Here’s one of the fantastic new paintings by Dan Parry-Jones that I’m taking to Battersea Affordable Art Fair in just under three weeks. Dan’s work is always very well received at fairs and exhibitions for a multitude of reasons, not least his vibrant colour palette, unique combination of painting and printmaking and nostalgic subject matter conjuring up childhood and summer holidays.
If you’d like complimentary tickets for Battersea, please subscribe to the mailing list via the link in bio. We’ll be on stand E8. Advance online booking only.

Here’s the lovely Cordelia (Dilly) Hutchison with one of her new tiger paintings for Battersea Affordable Art Fair in three weeks! Dilly’s oil paintings of tropical birds and beasts in staged jungle settings or against abstract backgrounds went down a storm at the fair last summer. I visited her in her home studio recently and the collection she has created for the forthcoming edition of the fair will not disappoint!

If you’d like to see her work for yourself at Battersea, you can subscribe to the mailing list via the link in bio for complimentary tickets. We’ll be on stand E8. Advance online booking only.

I’m really looking forward to taking Clare Bonnet’s work back to Battersea Affordable Art Fair next month. She’s been busying away in her lovely garden studio following maternity leave, creating monotypes (one-off prints) like this one and oil paintings like the second image.

Both mark a shift in painting style for Clare from a formal quality with bold, broad brushstrokes to freer, flatter forms, thinner paint and a focus on the drawn line. She says the imposed confinement of lockdown and subsequent opening up of life again inspired her to explore and play with “gestural expressions of the female form reclaiming space in a ‘post’ Covid era”.

If you’d like to see her work in the flesh at Battersea, please subscribe to the mailing list via the link in bio and come and see us on stand E8, near the central bar 🍷🥂 Advance online booking only.

Battersea Affordable Art Fair kicks off with the Charity Private View four weeks today! I can’t wait to take my artists’ work there because it’s always such a fun, buzzy event to exhibit at.

Serena Curmi is one of the artists I’m showing. Her miniature oil paintings of monochrome mountains were a big hit there last year. This year she’s incorporated a dreamy colour palette into some of her pieces.

If you’d like to see her miniatures and larger paintings for yourself, I have some complimentary tickets remaining - please subscribe to the mailing list via the link in bio ☝🏽 Advance online booking only. See you there on stand E8!

Here's Golnaz Afraz’s beautiful painting ‘Colours of the Past’ hanging proudly in its new home! I took the painting to show a couple in London in their brand new, absolutely stunning kitchen extension at the weekend and they fell in love with it. They’d been following Golnaz online but this was the first time they’d seen her work in the flesh. Although they were originally looking for a piece to hang on a large painted wall in the kitchen, they decided this one brought a welcome pop of colour to the exposed brick wall by the table. Doesn’t it look right at home surrounded by those plants? This is the first “proper” piece of original art that the couple have bought and Golnaz and I are really thrilled and grateful that they’ve chosen a painting by her 😊

Here's the third London Art Fair exhibit I'm sharing by Dan Parry-Jones on what would have been the event's preview day. A much-needed injection of sunshine and warmth for any Northern Hemisphere dwellers!

The fair's online ticket office is now taking bookings for the new dates: 20 to 24 April. For complimentary tickets, please subscribe to our mailing list (link in bio). See you there!

Here's the second piece I want to share by Dan Parry-Jones from his collection that I would have shown at the postponed London Art Fair this week. This one is a great example of Dan's colour explorations, which I touched on in yesterday's post. The bold complimentary colour pairings are very pleasing (olive green and the palest of mauves 😍). And I really like the way Dan has used blocks of colour to structure the semi-abstract landscape.

16/01/2022

The fourth artist whose work I’m taking to the postponed London Art Fair in April (which would have taken place this week), as well as to Battersea Affordable Art Fair in March, is Dan Parry-Jones. His technique of combining screen-printing, acrylic and oil painting and his subject matter of figures set in sun-drenched landscapes with LA vibes make his work a perennial favourite with collectors.

Dan constantly experiments, not least through colour, to push himself out of his comfort zone and explore different moods. “It is the struggle between adhering to a plan and allowing the automated side of the brain to take over and create something else that results in my strongest work.”

On Tuesday I’ll be previewing the exhibits I would have taken to London Art Fair with my mailing list. If you aren’t already on it and are interested in the work and the art fairs, please subscribe via the website (link in bio).

Here's the third painting by Lucinda that I've chosen from her London Art Fair collection. It was a gloriously sunny day in Bristol today, and actually warm on the skin when I took a friend's dog for a walk on the Downs, but contemplating these paintings is making me think it's time to get booking a summer holiday! Is that on anybody else's list this month?

Have a lovely weekend!

Here's another lovely oil painting by Lucinda Metcalfe that would have been shown at London Art Fair next week. Another inviting swimming pool (Lucinda's trademark), with dazzling sunlight reflections, but painted in a looser style than yesterday's piece.

It actually features a self-portrait. Can you spot the artist?!

Another artist I'm excited to be taking to London Art Fair (postponed from next week until 20 to 24 April) is Lucinda Metcalfe. I'll also have her wonderful oil paintings on my stand at Battersea Affordable Art Fair from 10 to 13 March.

Lucinda's work takes you on a journey to warmer climes (if you're reading this somewhere freezing, like it is here in Bristol today!). And on a journey into the abstracted reflections on the water's surface and the distortions of what's below.

Here's another great painting by Golnaz for London Art Fair, now taking place in April. It resonates with me because centre stage is a bottle of ketchup and for a period in my children's lives, they doused everything they ate with ketchup!

I love hearing how people connect with the paintings I exhibit - the interpretations are so varied!

Here's the second painting by Golnaz taken from the selection destined for London Art Fair, which is now taking place in April.

There is always so much to see in Golnaz's work - you notice something new each time. Today I can see what looks like a fish centre right, above the person whose face is covered by leaves. Golnaz will confirm or not, I'm sure! Covering faces with leaves or showing them with eyes closed is the artist's device for symbolising the self-censorship of women in Iran.

You may have seen the disappointing (but unsurprising) news that the organisers of London Art Fair have taken the decision to postpone the event until 20 to 24 April due to the challenging Covid situation. The artists and I have been working hard to get ready for the fair, so this comes as a huge let-down.

Until then (and indeed Battersea Affordable Art Fair in March) it’s onwards and upwards! I’m continuing, as planned, to celebrate the wonderful paintings of the artists I’ll be taking to London Art Fair in the spring. So today I’m sharing with you the first of three works by Golnaz Afraz, our lovely Franco-Iranian artist, who pays homage to everyday life in all its technicoloured complexity, making reference here and there to Iran’s treatment of women as second-class citizens.

I'm going to share a painting a day (that's the plan anyway...) by the four artists whose work I'm taking to London Art Fair in a couple of weeks - three by each so it looks nice on the grid 🙂

Here's Annette Pugh's second painting. She works from vintage photos, among other materials, to retell personal histories, exploring the concepts of leisure, longing and absence. I wonder what this lady's story was.

France-based Iranian artist Golnaz Afraz has exhibited widely in Europe and the Middle East since 2005 but her work wasn’t shown in the UK until 2014. I had the pleasure of exhibiting her paintings in London for the first time in 2017 and then again in 2019 and I am delighted to be representing her at London Art Fair from 19 to 23 January 2022!

Golnaz is an absolute joy to work with and what’s more I get to practice my French with her (as well as running Gala Fine Art, I’ve worked as a freelance translator of French to English for over 20 years...).

Here are some of the pieces being packed up today and shipped to Bristol ready to be framed before the fair.

Here are some joyful dancing naked ladies to warm the spirits on this chilly November day! ‘Rich in Blue’ is from a new series of ultramarine monotypes (single prints) of female figures by gallery artist Clare Bonnet, which she creates by transferring oil relief ink from a printing plate to archival paper. “The monotype process is a new discovery for me. The results are all one-offs. It really suits a gestural approach and allows lots of movement in each piece. The opportunity for experimentation is liberating and exciting!”.

A selection of Clare's monotypes is for sale on the Gala Fine Art website and I’m really looking forward to showing more at Battersea Affordable Art Fair in March! Clare’s had a break from the fair recently due to maternity leave, but her work is always well received there and she was even chosen by the director to paint the portrait of the fair’s competition winner a few years ago!

Exciting announcement!! I'm thrilled to share that Gala Fine Art has been selected to show at the prestigious London Art Fair from 19 to 23 January! It's our first time applying and I'm so proud of my artists. I'll be showing new work by Golnaz Afraz, Lucinda Metcalfe, Dan Parry-Jones and Annette Pugh.

Here I am in a very sunny mood at Jamaica Street Studios choosing work by Dan Parry-Jones to take there. Fellow studio holder and gallery artist said she wanted to photograph me in my yellow top matching the paintings!

Please subscribe to the mailing list (link in bio) to be the first to know about tickets.

I’ve just added some wonderful new work to the Gala Fine Art website by Birmingham-based artist Annette Pugh, ranging from miniatures to large-format pieces.

I’ve fallen in love with the first painting here (Summer Dress, oil on board, 20 x 20 cm) because it brings back memories of family outings to English beaches in the summer when I was a child – happy times despite the chilly winds and sandy sandwiches!

Annette draws on archive materials and the printed image (often vintage family photo albums) to explore, edit and re-present concepts relating to leisure, longing and absence. In so doing, she creates images that convey a powerful sense of time, place and narrative – all we viewers have to do is let our imaginations wander.

What do they conjure up for you?

This post celebrates Gala Fine Art reaching 1,000 followers this week! Thanks so much to you all for your interest and support! 🥰

I saw an incredible exhibition recently: the Paula Rego retrospective at Tate Britain in London. Paula Rego is a household name, but this exhibition was a revelation for me. I urge you to go – it runs until 24 October!

Rego was born in Lisbon in 1935, when Portugal was under a fascist dictatorship that lasted until 1974. That context has had a profound influence on her work, inspiring her to focus on the abuse of power, particularly concerning women’s rights and abortion rights. At the age of 16, she was sent to live in England and the following year she began studying painting at the Slade (1952-56). She still lives in London.

I love that Rego is a painter of women’s stories and the experience of being a woman. Her works are huge, colourful and arresting. She is supremely gifted at bringing her subjects’ characters and emotions to life. You feel their pain, fear, defiance, strength, independence, vulnerability and sexual desires. What Germaine Greer said of Rego’s work in 1988 is bang on: “It is not often given to women to recognise themselves in painting, still less to see their private world, their dreams, the insides of their heads, projected on such a scale and so immodestly, with such depth and colour.”

Among the pieces I found particularly striking is a series of large, painterly pastels depicting women who have just undergone backstreet abortions, which Rego created in response to Portugal’s failed abortion referendum in 1998 (image 2). These works are credited with contributing to the success of the second referendum, which saw abortion fully legalised in 2007. They are brutal, visceral and heartbreaking works.

One of the things I did this summer was to visit stunning North Wales. As well as going on an exhilarating mountain hike in the Moelwyns and visiting Harlech Castle, I visited the magical village of Portmeirion. Designed by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis, it was built in two stages between 1925 and 1976. His vision was to show how a naturally beautiful location (an estate with a cluster of old buildings, woods and streams set on steep cliffs overlooking a wide estuary) could be developed without being spoiled. The result is pretty astonishing! A brightly-coloured, Italianate-style coastal village, complete with two grand hotels, a central piazza, pizzeria, gelateria and lush gardens. It felt more like I was on the Italian Riviera than in Wales!

Morning all. It's been a while! I hope you're all well and have been enjoying the summer. Things have been quiet for Gala Fine Art, although the artists have still been grabbing time in their studios, in between looking after school-age children and going on holiday where possible!

I've just uploaded this stunning new painting by Dan Parry-Jones to the website to keep the summer vibes going a bit longer ☀️
