Caroline is a photographer based in Walthamstow and have been documenting Epping Forest and Hollow Ponds through the seasons during lockdown last year. She published a book 'Follow the Light: A year in Epping Forest and Hollow Ponds' that I'm selling to the public (£20 for hardcover)

Her photobook explores the ancient woodland throughout the changing of the seasons.

"In the extraordinary year of 2020, the forest bordering London and Essex provided me with a place of tranquility amongst the chaos of the outside world. Wandering between aged oaks and fields of yellow gorse, I documented the warm, dry spring in the first lockdown to the chilly winter days in the woodland. I hope that you will find inspiration through my photographs of this special and unique place."

If people would like to purchase a copy, they can contact her via DM on Instagram: Caroline Jones

In Epping Forest, enclosure is a dirty word. Before the wood’s 6,000 acres were declared ‘the Peoples’ Forest’ by Queen Victoria, landowners closed in to try and stake their claims. Commoners once had rights in the forest. However, the expansion of London from the early 1800s brought about a new era. The land here, within reach of the city, increased in value and the rights were under threat from enclosure. https://geographical.co.uk/uk/discovering-britain/item/1441-the-peoples-forest

A brief history of Epping. The Domesday Book of 1086 gives brief details of “Eppinga”, a small community consisting of a few scattered farms and a chapel on the edge of the forest at the place known today as Epping Upland. The name “Eppinga” gives a clue to the early inhabitants of the village. It is thought to be from the Anglo-Saxon, “ep” meaning up and “ing” meaning cultivated lands, indicating that the area was settled well before the Norman Conquest of 1066. https://www.eppingtowncouncil.gov.uk/history-of-epping
