Today, we are delighted to spotlight, RP artist member, with her wonderful portrait painting, titled 'Hera'.

"Hera is the implacable queen of the Greek gods. I wanted to paint an imperious archetype as an experiment in expression. I don't often seek out the more unbending human traits when I am looking for empathy in a portrait, since most people are multi dimensional beings, but it was an enjoyable exercise to consider what aloof, unbending hauteur might look like. I have included some of her symbols to place her in her traditional sphere, but tried to keep her in the present too. I don't feel a binary choice of good or bad when I think of Hera, she is an ancient figure of traits that transcend time and exist everywhere there are humans. The universality of the Greek gods appeal to me. "- Frances Bell RP.

Happy Easter 🐰 We hope your Easter is egg-stra special today 🥚

On the occasion of this wonderful day, we share the beautiful artwork by Matt Underwood SWLA. "I am both painter and printmaker: my printmaking is that of traditional Japanese wood block printing, moku hanga, one of the more painterly printmaking techniques. Pigment mixed with rice paste is brushed onto my carved blocks and hand burnished onto damp Japanese papers to build up successive layers of colour."

Botanical motifs often dominates Matts work, with recurring elements like flower heads, branches, leaves, and berries. Creatures add dynamic contrasts, enhancing the interplay of lines and forms.

Mall Galleries

Mall Galleries is one of London’s foremost galleries. Located adjacent to Trafalgar Square and overlooking St. James’s Park, the gallery runs a vibrant and diverse programme of contemporary art exhibitions and events. Mall Galleries is operated by the Federation of British Artists, a major visual arts charity established in 1961. The Federation (FBA) comprises eight of the UK’s leading art societies, specialising in oil, portrait, marine, wildlife, watercolour, pastel, printmaking and sculpture. Each holds their annual exhibition at Mall Galleries. A unique national resource, the FBA has over 600 practising artists and is home to the largest life drawing society in London (Hesketh Hubbard Art Society). Members’ work is available to buy through a successful Fine Art Consultancy and Commission service and directly online at Buy Art | Buy Now.
