It's the beginning of London Fashion Week and what better way to commemorate it here at the gallery than by learning about Guy Portelli's work 'In Conversation with Alexander McQueen'.
This beautiful piece is over a metre long, consisting of hundreds of dazzling glass mosaic pieces.
Portelli was inspired to create the piece after having a conversation with Gary McQueen at a charity event.
'All of [Alexander's] themes resonated with me: the dark and light , bird shapes and botanical, all subjects that I had explored in my own work.'
'In doing my research I found that Alexander McQueen used his hands in a very demonstrative way in conversation and these reflected his use of birds in flight patterns, the hands evolved into birds within the art work.'
'Naomi Campbell is portrayed with Rams horns and so is Sandra Blow where her feather hat morphs into the raven as the introduction to a panoramic art work that has the essence of a film narrative.'
See Guy's work as part of the Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition 2025 from 26 February to 8 March.
