MEET THE ARTIST: Dave Buonaguidi

Dave Buonaguidi is nothing short of a legend within his own two lifetimes.

Having reached the top of the advertising industry (and having founded two of the most credible & successful agencies in London), Dave then went on a permanent sabbatical in 2020, setting off to explore the sunlit uplands of his fertile imagination via artistic endeavours under the pseudonym Hackney Dave (largely a response to the absolute impossibility of anyone actually remembering how to spell his surname correctly in less than five attempts.)

Admittedly, this wasn't Dave B's (yes, we're still struggling) first foray into punchy, text-based prints. His emblematic 'MAKE TEA NOT WAR' poster, created for the 2003 anti-war march, became an icon of the counter-Iraq War protest and arguably kickstarted his career as a standalone artist.

As is patently obvious to anyone with passing familiarity to his work, Dave likes to grab your attention; have fun; work with unexpected, found (often archive) materials.

Alternatively - and here comes the Chat GPT bit - by supplementing visceral and verbal techniques present in both advertising and propaganda onto found objects and vintage ephemera, Buonaguidi has created a singular style. From humorous colloquialisms to more emphatic statements, which are screen-printed onto found objects such as vintage maps, posters and signs, his work reflects our current context and seeks to arouse an emotional attachment or reaction from the viewer.

Result: absolutely banger of an exhibition.

Artists In Action

‘Under The Skin’ is the result of a 12 month collaboration between the ENO and Mobile Art Disco.

The exhibition showcased new artworks created by leading artists – including Stuart Semple, Sara Pope, Nathan Bowen, My Dog Sighs and Matt Small – inspired by the work of the ENO’s approach to diversity.

Thank you to all the artists who made ‘Under The Skin’ a great success and for inspiring us and many of the importance of diversity.
