Play Worcester are a charity with a big, playful mission - to champion children’s right to play, and make our city a more joyful, exciting and child-friendly place to be.

What will you create with their big, blue blocks at the Festival of Play?

Pirate ships, dens, giant marble runs – you’re in charge of your play and can let your imagination take charge.

We can't begin to express how honoured we felt running Vardo painting workshops with families at St. Bartholomew's CE school yesterday as part of our Atchin Tan Project. The creations were inspired by family, joy, cultural heritage and so much more. Thank you so much to everyone who got involved ❤️

This week I'm going to introduce you to the Vardos in our collection. Our Transport Gallery is currently closed as we prepare to replace the roof. However, the power of social media can bring the Vardos to you until you're able to visit again.
This waggon is one of my favourites - Romany Maid - a green Bow Top.
It's likely that Romany Maid was built by a local carpenter or wheelwright rather than a firm of waggon makers. She was the last horse drawn waggon on Hartlebury Common - home to Percy Hodgkins and family.
In 1958 Peter Ingram bought Romany Maid from Wisdom Smith. The Museum acquired it in November 1965, making her home here for over 60 years; a beautiful piece of Romany local history.
In terms of design - the Bow Top (or Leeds) waggon has its canvas top built on a bowed wooden frame that rests on a ledge. Its lightweight and low centre of gravity made it an easy waggon to pull, whilst its green canvas roof made it less conspicuous in open country. Inside, Romany Maid is quite dark due to not having side windows.
Come back tomorrow to find out about Ethelinda, the Square Bow.

We are so glad Year 1 St. Ambrose Catholic Primary School had such a great time last week! Our resident Florence Nightingale at Worcestershire County Museum at Hartlebury Castle never tires of sharing her story to young learners 🎓
