A fantastic art exhibition with so many gift ideas for Christmas! Try to get to Mortenhampstead to see this show.
Green Hill is an award-winning dedicated arts and history venue on the edge of Dartmoor.
Moretonhampstead Development Trust opened the doors to Green Hill for the first time on Saturday 10 December 2011 to a stunning transformation of the old school building into an extensive, mixed-use community resource. The attractive Victorian schoolhouse now incorporates a contemporary art gallery also selling arts and crafts in the foyer, heritage displays and archive, a number of purpose-built
artist’s studios, a large dedicated youth centre and offices. Green Hill attracts a diverse audience to enjoy a programme that nourishes the arts and crafts community of Dartmoor and encourages visitors from far and wide to engage in contemporary visual art.

#2024
We are very excited to have some pieces of beautiful jewellery for sale in our winter fair this year.
Kathleen’s work has a delicate and unique style and would make the perfect gift for someone special this Christmas.
“My workspace overlooks the river Exe with its dependable seasonal rhythms. Inspiration comes from elements of nature, meandering water, foliage and moon glade reflections. A fascination with a variety of leaf forms and methods of articulation have become an important focus. My work often evolves via engagement in the making process. I enjoy the tension between form, function and the practical challenges of fit, comfort and movement.”
Please get in touch if you would like more information regarding this work. Our gallery open hours are 10.00am - 4.00pm from Wednesday to Saturday.

We have started adding new dates onto our 2024 calendar. The following workshops are suitable for beginners and would make the perfect gift.
Saturday the 17th of February
12.30pm - 3.00pm
‘In This Place’
£20 pp
“In this workshop we will look at 'place' and explore ideas about landscape. We will construct a landscape/artwork using drawings of objects that we will collect outside in the church yard next door (artist will bring some objects along if weather is bad).
We will look at shape, colour and texture and will be using drawing techniques which are not about visual accuracy as in observational drawing, but more about movement, spatial awareness, memory, using senses and instinct. This enjoyable workshop is designed to encourage experimenting, creative thinking and risk taking within a supportive environment and we will each produce a finished abstract landscape.
This workshop is suitable for beginners. Children over the age of 7 are welcome but must be booked in. This is the perfect workshop for those who want to learn how to use materials in an experimental, thought provoking way.”
Saturday the 9th of March
2.00pm - 4.00pm
Cyanotype Workshop
£20pp
“In this workshop we will explore cyanotypes, a Victorian process originated in the 1840s by John Hershel which produces a characteristically blue print. Anna Atkins was inspired by him and used this process to produce images of plants, ferns, and seaweed.
The process is fairly straightforward, and you will learn how to mix chemicals to produce your own light sensitive paper. Objects are then placed on the paper and exposed to light to create a blue and white photographic image.”

Returning for Winter 2023, our Fair of art and craft is the perfect place to buy truly unique Christmas gifts.
A showcase of quality, locally made works including jewelry, textiles, ceramics, paintings, candles, cards and leather!
Green Hill is using this winter season to show and sell work from many artists new to the gallery as well as from celebrated local makers.
- Slow Stitch and Cake -
Textile artist Melinda Schwakhofer runs this lovely workshop at Green Hill Arts on a regular basis. The final session for this Autumn will be on the 11th of November!
Slow Stitch and Cake is gentle, unstructured session to sit and stitch together. It is a meditative and mindful practice where the process of the movement of needle and thread through fabric is as important, if not more so, than the goal of producing a finished piece of work. You will learn some basics of hand stitching and some new stitches, but the emphasis is on letting your creativity unfold.
The next three sessions are on the following dates:
13th of January 2024
10th of February 2024
9th of March 2024
For more information visit the Green Hill website!
Flag Festival 2024
- Help needed please! -
On Sunday the 5th of November from 10.00am to 4.00pm we will be going through ALL 140 flags to check for any repairs that need doing.
If you can lend a hand and your (hopefully) eagle eyes, we would enthusiastically welcome your input - in the upstairs meeting room at Green Hill Arts. Tea, coffee, and biscuits provided. This annual ritual keeps the flags going, and an added bonus is that your hard work will be rewarded with the opportunity of mending some of the flags too, but don't let that put you off. Andrea and Veronica will be delighted to see you!
Tomorrow is your last chance to visit our current exhibition ‘Fire and Clay’. It has been wonderful to witness the work of these ‘home grown’ makers all in one place!
Over the last few weeks we have been posting about each of the 11 ceramicists involved. Today is the turn of Petra Steward…
“My inspiration has always been rooted in the enjoyment of my chosen processes and materials, and in my love of cooking and baking, serving and eating good food! One idea flows into another, often through small accidental happenings. Images and shapes drawn from my everyday environment, home, family and motherhood……the stories that weave the tapestry of our lives, always present in my mind as I work. My work is all constructed from slabs, paper patterns are cut around and the slabs are folded, bent and joined to create soft forms that can be repeated in batches. They are decorated with simple slips, dipped, brushed and printed in layers.
I come together with my husband Jeremy Steward, at the end of the making cycle, to share the excitement and serendipity of our woodfired salt kiln, The Pheonix. They are all fired to 1300°C.
The feeling of coming home when returning from a day away, or a longer holiday is something I am trying to imbue into my work. Feelings of nostalgia, comfort and the solace of home. I hope that these personal observations and expressions may resonate with others.”
Please get in touch if you would like more information regarding this artists work. Our gallery open hours are 10.00am - 4.00pm.
Good morning!
These lovely photographs of Sabine Nemet’s work are the perfect prompt to remind you all that there is officially only one week left to visit our ‘Fire and Clay’ exhibition! Our gallery open hours are 10.00am - 4.00pm from Wednesday to Saturday. We look forward to seeing you.😁
Nic Collins at Green Hill Arts
“My first encounter with woodfiring began because I had no other way to fire my work. When I was in my late teens and early twenties building kilns and wheels and sourcing my own clay from the local river banks was a regular occurrence. I experimented with raku, sawdust firings and saltglazing.
Derby College of Art accepted me in 1985-86 to study Studio ceramics despite being a self taught thrower. After leaving Derby I worked briefly in potteries in Italy and Germany. In January 1988 I started my own workshop at Powdermills in the heart of Dartmoor. The first kiln there was a fast fire Olsen type kiln. In 1991 a large Anagama kiln was built. At that time there were very few Anagama kilns in the UK. The only other was used by fellow potter, neighbour and friend Svend Bayer. Much experience was gained on both sides, through mutual firing help (up to ten firings per year).
Since the early 90s my pots have dramatically changed, mainly due to influence from effects of the kiln. For example: when side stoking the Anagama, inevitably pots would be knocked over, falling into the fire box areas and be buried in ash and ember. In the early days these pots would be discarded as failures, but now this type of pot is where it gets interesting.
Several kilns a year are built to suit changing pot styles and firing ideas. The alchemy of wood firing is still fascinating to and with each firing brings fresh ideas for new pots and new kilns. An endless journey!”

We are very excited to host the work of renowned ceramicist Laurel Keeley during ‘Fire and Clay’.
“The clay from which I build my pots is returned to stone in the heat of the kiln. Briefly, I intervene in a perfect natural cycle and make something out of the earth.
The surfaces I alter with my fingers, with knife edges and wooden tools. I add clay and remove it and layer smooth coloured porcelain clays over, to give image and texture. The surface is a story. We are the story.”

Drypoint Printmaking with Sue Coleman:
“Drypoint is the simplest and most direct of the intaglio processes. The technique is an etching process where an image is scratched into a metal or plastic plate with a drypoint tool to create an image. In drypoint, it is the ‘burr’ created by a scratching process that holds the ink and transfers the image when printed through a press. The more prominent the burr the darker the line”.
Saturday, December 9th. 11.00am - 1.00pm.
Adults only.

Inspiration for a lot of the work shown within ’Fire and Clay’ has come from daily life. Bruce Chivers says his work “is essentially about mark making on simple forms” and for him and others in the exhibition, the element of an unpredictable result is as important as any initial intention. “My work is about simple forms imbued with a sense of spontaneity. 'Raku' as a technique allows me the opportunity to embrace that element of suprise, seeing and knowing then becomes as important as the making.”
Please get in touch if you would like more information regarding Bruce Chivers work.

Charlie Collier is showing his work in the Green Hill Arts Gallery for the first time. Make sure to visit us before the end of October to see his exciting display of pots and vessels.
“I look for in a pot what you seek in other people - warmth, generosity and most importantly, life. Pots offer that direct link between the makers hand, and the user - it’s an art, just as much about feel, as it is form and function. I create Stoneware pots for use in the home and garden, made using Cornish clay, incorporating local slips and wood ashes, Wood and gas fired.”
Please get in touch if you would like more information regarding the work Charlie has on display. Our gallery open hours are 10.00am - 4.00pm from Wednesday to Saturday.
Jill Fanshawe Kato
Jills creations can be seen at Green Hill Arts up until the 28th of October.
Both a deep connection to the natural world and experience of travelling have inspired the pieces on show. Travel to Spain, Asia, and Brazil… to mountains and tropical islands, have all acted as sources of inspiration.
“My interest in the natural world was awakened at the age of ten, when my family moved from Nottingham to the small Devonshire village of Kingskerswell, near Torquay. Numerous injured or orphaned wild birds and animals came into my care, once I had a tame jackdaw which stayed for 3 years before returning to the wild. Thus my love of nature is very much part of my ceramics today.”

Taja, who is featured in our current exhibition ‘Fire and Clay’ is a renowned ceramicist who works predominantly with porcelain. His works shown in the gallery are of a surprising scale, filling the space with a sense of organic movement.
Taja states, “I created these floating images which I dreamt vividly one night. In this dream, I was in a gallery looking at three porcelain tea pots in the air. It was magical. I still remembered this image in the morning and wanted to create this magical image. It seemed to be difficult to float three tea pots in the air, so I used fish shapes instead, to bring the image of fish swimming or floating in water.”
