Street party preps. Rory up a tree manfully hanging our bunting with good mates Mike and Cattyman. Only issue: it was too low for the rubbish truck so there we were, 6 of us in pajamas at 7am, running everyone’s bin bags up the street before the bin men swung back round.

Great news! We have made contact with the gg-son of George Wing, a retired Judge in Sheffield. Also, Tom Samuel’s beautiful boards are finding favour among our collectors and he is just finishing a new creation. Finally we are wanting to create a memorial to the breadboard makers of Sheffield using all the trade catalogues in the ABM archives. If you have any inspired suggestions about how to make this happen, please get in touch.
8 of Tom Samuel’s magnificent creations were snapped up and sent to Yorkshire. But fear not, 6 more are already turned and resting so the wood settles before the carving can begin.
A milestone today as the 15th bb heads off to it’s new home, this time in Yorkshire. Enjoying researching them one by one, packaging them up lovingly and providing a CV of what the bb is telling me about its Carver, Turner, life experiences and wood. My thanks to our loyal supporters!
As the boards go to new homes, one DC (delighted customer), Deborah Lloyd, took this lovely shot presenting her fresh sourdough. Another proud moment was spotting the first broccoli floret of the season, amongst a forest of shoulder-high plants. Our Boxing Day walk was a jolly hike across the wilds of Wimbledon and past its Windmill where you can have a go at hand milling a cupful of wheat to take home.
Making the best of it with Nikoo. Note to self: place figures AFTER the icing has set, to avoid sinking feeling. Bisque and plastic figures on a bisque Royal Worcester platter in the 1862 International Exhibition catalogue p257. Stay safe everyone.
Taste testing Hovis Granary flour. At first sight it looked a bit too white for my taste. And it’s full of dietary supplements which is vaguely insulting. But give the girl a medal for baking the thing. Conclusion: not tasty enough for me. Recommendation: I’m sorry to disappoint this famous British institution but they need more whole meal in a ‘Granary’ product and no chemically aftertaste.
While hoping this beauty soon finds a good home, I am pondering how on earth to eat all these squash; and gave a sad old Hungarian dough trough some TLC. Don’t think I’ll be getting any Hovis prizes for my loaf though!

Halloween again! We are pairing up boards with rather lovely knives this time which complement each other. The blades can be sharpened like any kitchen knife.

Why do I do this to myself? I know. I love it. As preparations gather pace a song bubbled up, to be sung multo franticoso to ‘12 days of Christmas ‘: On the day before OH my list appears to be; 12 towels washing, 11 jams a-cooling, 10 emails waiting, 9 cold coffees, 8 shrubs for pruning, 7 neighbours asking, 6 paths need sweeping, 5 ! proving ! loaves! , 4 volunteers, 3 tele calls, 2 hungry cats.......And... hoovering ... all ... the... breadboards! We are fully booked for this year. I’m sorry to disappoint.

Not just a bunch of Breadboards! Hurrah to the National Trust for having the courage to think outside the “outdated mansion experience “ box. And a case in point, Archery at Hever Castle this summer which engaged both my children.

This time-freeze has been useful. The museum now mirrors the book, so you can come and handle your favourite pieces. And the much- needed inventory is in progress. In the process, we have identified pieces which need rehoming and are preparing a gallery on eBay. More details soon. Needless to say, all proceeds will go towards upkeep.
