Several SWS members are part of a painting group who meet in Hove a couple of times a month. It’s great for company, craic, and feedback and has gone from strength to strength over the now many years we have met. This very charming painting was done at our last meet up by the lovely and very talented Krysia Drury who had spent an inspiring weekend at the Revival Festival at Goodwood in Sussex!
SWS member John Haywood will be showing his luminous watercolours alongside 12 other talented artists this weekend at the beautiful Danny House! Details below.
“The exhibition is titled ‘A quiet wisdom’ and will feature the work of 12 Sussex artists and their explorations and interpretations of trees! I’m really looking forward to seeing the range of work that will be on display. I’m frantically trying to get everything framed and ready in time. As well as some larger paintings that I’ve shared on here before, I’ve done a lot of smaller works specifically for this exhibition that I’ll be showing for the first time. These four are all about A5 in size, and with a mount pop effortlessly into an A4 sized frame.
I’m hoping that some people might find them a perfect way to bring the outdoors indoors!
The exhibition will take place in the Great Hall at Danny House, Hurstpierpoint, BN6 9BB. Open Saturday and Sunday from 10am.
There’ll be a private view on Saturday from 5-7pm (if anyone asks, tell them I invited you!)
I’ll also be there all day on Sunday so do say hello. Fingers crossed I might even get some painting done, the grounds are beautiful!”

“I spent Sunday painting during the final day of the Sussex Watercolour Society exhibition at the Linklater Pavilion in Lewes.
I don’t mind saying that it was quite a daunting experience! I’m quite used to members of the public coming up to speak to me when I’m out and about painting, but to be flailing about under the scrutiny of so many experts in watercolour painting, well that was totally new to me and quite stressful!
Fortunately, aside from being hugely talented, the SWS members are also a lovely bunch of people and were very supportive and encouraging as I floundered about in the sweltering heat. (If you look closely at the second image of me painting, you can see that I even had to take my flip flops off!)
Special thanks to and who kept me company and in good spirits throughout my afternoon labours, the final version of which you can see here. I painted 99% of this on Sunday, but had to wait until the paper was completely dry and flat before I could add the masts and rigging for the boat: ‘Low tide on the river Ouse at Lewes’. The building in the background with the triangular roof is Linklater Pavilion, where the exhibition took place, as seen from the bridge on Lewes High Street.”

Had some lovely conversations, so much so I totally forgot to take any pictures so am grateful to for grabbing a photo of me in front of my paintings at the end of the night!
I’ll be at the Linklater Pavilion for most or the day tomorrow (10am-5pm) and, if I can find a space, I’ll be splashing some paint about. My plan is to loosen up a bit by finishing off the half done quarter sheet view you can see here, after which I think I’ll do a half sheet painting of the third image, because the view is of the river Ouse that runs through Lewes, and the building in the background is the Linklater Pavilion, which seems fitting. Do pop by if you’re in the vicinity, the exhibition is great and I’d welcome any support, encouragement and advice as I’m feeling distinctly rusty so it could be a disaster!”

Phew, I’ve been having a bit of a panic recently because I have an exhibition opening next Friday but I’m going camping tomorrow for 6 days… and until today, I’d done almost nothing to prepare!
The exhibition is work by members of the Sussex Watercolour Society. I’ll be showing work alongside 22 other watercolour artists and, what I loved about this exhibition last year, was the amazing range of approaches and the outstanding quality of everyone’s work! I really do recommend having a look at the feed to get a flavour of some of the styles and approaches. Each artist has exactly the same space to work with, an 8ft by 4ft board and we only have a couple of hours to get everything set up before it opens to the public at 2pm, so it really helps to have a plan!
What you can see in these images is a panic induced effort to get my act together! I taped out 8ft x 4ft on the floor and had a play around with different arrangements of frames and paintings. I think I’m just about sorted now (famous last words) and am hugely relieved that the show (or at least my bit of it) should now go on.
Here are all of the details for the exhibition and it would be wonderful if anyone was able to visit (and if you do, please do say hello!)”

I’ve got my favourites and I’m also enjoying the ‘fruit pastillesque’ monotypes of Wolstonbury Hill and the Downs and looking forward to seeing them in frames. It’s good to be able to put a lot of trees out all together. I revert to trees in between other things and often in the winter when the branches are bare and the countryside is bleak and interesting. “Perhaps surprisingly, this distinctly French view is just a few streets away from me in Hove!
The building was designed in 1893 in the French Second Empire Style by local architect Thomas Lainson.
It was originally the main regional storage facility for the Brighton & Hove Cooperative Supply Association and had built in stables and was decorated with terracotta.
It’s now 75 Holland Road (aka Palmeira Yard) and has been converted into ‘loft style’ apartments, (so still a storage facility of sorts!) It’s a stunning building, worthy of its Grade II listing for its architectural significance, and I love the light on it at the end of the day. I could get the full image into the post, which is a shame, so took a little video too.” (Check out to see the video)
