The wonderful Dominic Blake, modelling over zoom. I think the perspective of using a phone camera on the floor for seated poses is a great asset, but the distortion defeated me in the standing ones.

Still trying to get a 'Freudian' quality to this figure, working on torso and hands until I've got a better painterliness. Loving spending time digging through info and images about how he worked. Think I need to use much thicker paint. The white I use is very expensive, probably best kept for finishing touches, so going to try cutting titanium white with bulking agent and slightlh warming the hue, as an alternative. Also working for a client means checking in about whether they're happy with having hues and shapes exaggerated. Apparently Lucian didn't waste time worrying about getting a likeness... that's going to be a whole extra challenge! **e

Progress update. Spending a lot of time researching Freud's methods, mostly by staring at his paintings 🧐 Trying to emulate his brushstroke style. Extra hard when working from a photo reference, because the colours are less rich than real life. I am trying to record some elements of process, there's a bit of a chat and a short timelapse on my YouTube channel if you're interested.

Fabulous first day of uninterrupted painting, got SO much done, almost forgot to eat, broke the back of this portrait, brilliant! This commission is now about 25% done (that's probably overoptimistic 😁). I've been asked to use a 'Freud' style, which is really fun and challenging. Unlike Freud (who worked out from a central feature) I have transferred the photo outline to the canvas, then used a burnt Umber underpainting. It was so hot today that that dried in the sun over (finally remembered) lunch, so I could block in the colour this afternoon. Hoping to make more progress tomorrow.
