Strawberry Hill House & Garden

Strawberry Hill House & Garden A Fairy Tale Castle by the Thames
The Strawberry Hill Trust was founded in 2002 with a mission to restore Walpole’s Villa and to open it to a wider public.
(25)

Strawberry Hill is a Grade I listed property and, prior to the restoration, had been identified as a place in need of urgent assistance. It was featured on the BBC2 series ‘Restoration’; it is listed on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk register; and it was included in the 2004 World Monuments Fund Watch list of the world’s 100 Most Endangered Sites. It is considered to be one of the most important houses in England because it was here that Horace Walpole’s passion for Gothic became manifest and inspired the popular Gothic revival movement in architecture and the tradition in literature. The house is often described as one of the jewels in the stretch of properties running along the Thames from Hampton Court to Kew.

‘Write to Horace’ and join our Letter Writing Campaign

Inspired by the prolific writings of Horace Walpole, we invite you to ‘Write to Horace’ about how your community has come together to make a difference during this crisis.

In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the restoration of Strawberry Hill House, created in the 18th century, these letters will then be displayed as part of an imaginative art installation at the House later this year. #WriteToHorace

Horace Walpole's Curators - Strawberry Hill House & Garden

During his lifetime Horace Walpole built Strawberry Hill, filled it with an eclectic collection that we call his ‘treasure’, and wrote many letters and other literary works. As he neared the end of his life, Horace carefully ensured that this assortment would survive as testimony to his achievements.

Returning for its second year, the Strawberry Hill Flower Festival is going online, offering a range of talks, workshops, demonstrations and behind-the-scenes from some of the UK’s leading floral designers and growers.

Garden expert and Strawberry Hill House Patron, Alan Titchmarsh said:

‘As a Patron of Strawberry Hill House, I am delighted that this year’s Flower Festival is moving online. As we all adapt to this new world in which we find ourselves, it's wonderful that inspiring tales of Horace Walpole's garden and practical sessions on floristry can be delivered into people's homes.’

Over two days audiences will able to sign up to sessions on floristry and growing from the comfort of their own homes. Sustainable practice is at the heart of the floral artists’ work as they share online content on what can be achieved using traditional techniques.

This event is curated by floral creatives Leigh Chappell @leigh.chappell.flowers and Janne Ford @jannel.ford. #StrawberryFlowerFestival

"Lilac-tide" was Horace Walpole's favourite time of year: "I came hither yesterday, and am transported with the beauty of the country and with its perfumed air too. The lilactide scents even the insides of the rooms." (Horace Walpole to Henry Conway, May 1784)

Strawberry Hill’s eighteenth-century garden is one of the earliest in the English naturalistic style. Horace Walpole’s delightful essay on garden design is perhaps the most famous and influential piece of writing on the English landscape garden. Written between 1750 and 1770, it was first published in 1780 as part of Walpole’s ‘Anecdotes of Painting in England’.

With its winding paths, grove of trees, lilacs and honeysuckles ‘hanging down in festoons’, this beautiful landscape, designed by Walpole himself from 1747, contrasted with the popular styles of the time.

Today, the garden is lovingly cared for by our Gardener-in-charge and a dedicated group of garden volunteers who continue to restore the landscape of the garden. #NationalGardeningWeek #HoraceWalpole #StrawberryHillHouse

Horace Walpole described his bed, which he placed in the Blue Bedchamber, as a chintz day bed; it was one of Horace’s prized possessions and one of the first pieces of furniture installed in Strawberry Hill. It is reputed to be the bed in which his Father died.

In the summer of 2014, members of the Strawberry Hill Sewing Bee were approached to create the soft furnishings for a replica bed. All of the sewing was to be done by hand following 18th century techniques. This was a rather daunting prospect as none of the members had done anything like this before.

The project was completed in December 2019 after 5 years of work, during which the Bees learnt many new skills. Pam Crisp and Hazel Dolton, members of our fabulous Sewing Bee team of volunteers recount their story: www.strawberryhillhouse.org.uk/sewing-bee
