Very sad news, having to report the passing yesterday of my friend Steve Williams.
I had known Steve for over 25 years, we first met in one of the old limestone quarries on Wenlock Edge in Shropshire where we both lived, both sharing a passion for fossils we struck up a friendship that lasted all these years.
Steve was an excellent collector, he had the patience to go through rock with a toothcomb which paid off on numerous occasions when he would come away from a site with more fossils than most people could ever find.
He was also an excellent fossil preparator, usually working with only the most basic of tools, he prepped most of the fossils in my own collection, and did prep work for a number of dealers, which means there are a lot of fossils out there in people’s collections all over the world that were prepped by Steve.
He was also a talented artist I have quite a collection of his paintings that I bought from him over the years.
Steve unfortunately developed inoperable cancer earlier this year (the photograph of him was one I took in September) he was already very ill then and in a lot of pain. He remained positive until the end. I got to visit him in the Severn Hospice in Shrewsbury a number of times in the last few weeks, the last time being Monday where I had given him a collection of Fossils I had collected from the Yorkshire coast the previous week, he was delighted with those and we had a good time going through them and putting names to them all.
I spoke to Steve on the phone on Christmas Day and had arranged to see him this afternoon, but with no answer from his phone this morning I phoned the Hospice to be given the sad news that he had passed away the previous day.
I had managed to do one thing that I know bought him some comfort before he passed, he was very upset at the thought that there would be nothing to remember him by once he had gone. Last month I was able to pass onto the Natural History Museum in London a small collection of very rare fossil Silurian Cyclocystoids that Steve had found some years ago in Shropshire, they have been confirmed as being new to science and I have been told that they will be named after him, I was able to give him that news which pleased him greatly.
Having lost my own father last week and now Steve, it’s not been the best of Christmas’s.
Now looking forward to the New Year and the Spring.
Gone but definitely not forgotten, so long Steve…..

Found last week a very rare crinoid from the Cefn Einion Formation of Shropshire, England – the formation consists of Mudstone, Siltstone and Sandstone. Sedimentary Bedrock formed approximately 424 to 426 million years ago in the Silurian Period. Local environment previously dominated by shallow seas.
I actually found the crinoid inside part of a cephalopod shell which may explain why this one got preserved; it’s the first crinoid I have ever seen in this formation which just usually yields brachiopods and cephalopods, the visible length is 3cm
