Swindon Museum & Art Gallery

Swindon Museum & Art Gallery The Swindon Museum & Art Gallery is based in Old Town, Swindon. Please visit our website for information on current exhibitions and events.

Swindon's remarkable art collection has a reputation as one of the best of British 20th Century Art outside London. It was established by local benefactor, H J P Bomford, during 1944 from a generous donation of works. Swindon Museum has displays of local history, archaeology and geology. The museum displays tell the story of Swindon's Jurassic past, its connections with the Roman Empire and the more recent social history of this thriving town. Swindon Museum and Art Gallery have various events running throughout the year.

Our new pick of the month display showcases the Broad Street First Aid Station. Earlier this year, our friends at Purton Museum gifted us a clock used at the First Aid Station during the end of the Second World War. The Station was used to treat injuries incurred during WWII bombing raids, as well as trips and falls people suffered during the Blackout. Alongside the clock, we have a photo of some of the nurses and Air Raid Precaution Wardens who were based at Broad Street, as well as an helmet used by a Swindon ARP Warden. #swindonmuseum #wwii #swindonpast #swindonhistory #worldwarii #airraidprecautions #broadgreen #broadstreetswindon

OBJECT OF THE WEEK
Fish shaped clay pipe bowl, late 19th Century
Used from the introduction of tobacco to England in the 16th Century until the early 20th Century, clay pipes often had decorated bowls that celebrated everyday life, from plants, birds and animals to characters from mythology and sporting events. They were fragile, and disposable, and bowls are often found without the stem. #objectoftheweek

Uncanny: our current ceramics exhibition explores some of the more unusual and unique ceramics in our collection. This is ‘Rainbow and Hills’ by Sotirakis Ioannolu, which was acquired by Swindon in the 1970s. Through a series of softly curved shapes, it suggests a magical landscape. Uncanny is on until the 28th September 2019 #ceramics #studioceramics #ceramica #ceramicart #keramik #modernceramics

Have you seen our #greatwesternembroiderers exhibition InFocus Stitching yet? The exhibition brings together fantastic examples of embroidery, stitching and textile art, inspired by old photos of Swindon. Jane Smith created this work in response to the bandstand in Swindon’s Town Gardens. It combines machine stitching, hand stitching and embroidery to bring the scene to life. The exhibition is on until the 7th September, so do take a look #textileart #embroidery #handembroidery #handembroidered #handstitching #exhibition #contemporaryembroidery #embroideryexhibition

We are delighted that Spring in Eden from the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art features in the new @pallanthousegallery exhibition, ‘Ivon Hitchens: Space Through Colour’. This must-see exhibition brings together the largest collection of Hitchens paintings for thirty years to explore the artist’s distinctive use of colour. Hitchens nights be best known for his expressive landscapes, but the exhibition also showcases portraits, figure studies and interiors, like Swindon’s 1925 painting, which was acquired by us in 1968 with the support of the V&A Purchase Fund. #ivonhitchens #pallanthousegallery #modernbritishart #modernbritishpainting #stilllifepainting
