The team at First Thursdays are especially excited to announce that our own MADELEINE BUNTING will be in the authors chair on the 1st June at 7pm to talk about her latest publication, The Seaside, England’s Love Affair. This remarkable book provides a powerful, thoughtful and compassionate analysis of almost forgotten British seaside towns where poverty and inequality sit in the shadow of gentrification. Alongside discussion of her latest book Madeleine will consider how the idea of place is a recurring theme in her writing.

On the fifth day Advent we are delighted to introduce
Lizzy is a fabric designer. Her designs are fresh and vibrant and inspired by her love of the countryside, her garden and the coast.
Lizzie trained in Textile Design and surface decoration which allowed her to experiment with print, she developed a love of block printing and now, all her designs originate from her lino cut prints, and as such, each fabric retains the essence of traditional block prints.
Each design is hand carved and hand printed before being scanned and reproduced digitally. The fabric is printed in the U.K using eco-friendly processes.
Products include cushions, lampshades and cosmetic bags, plus a range of hand screen printed tea towels, lampshades and cushions.
Lizzie’s beautiful products are available . They are so popular with our customers - hardly surprising given their beauty and quality.
Two relatively new artists are here for the third day of Advent. Marisa Tommasini (pics1-3) creates beautiful earrings up-cycled from vintage tins. Each piece is unique and so delicate.
Karin Fermor (pics4-6) is inspired by nature. In her jewellery she uses simple, lines and shapes creating elegant pieces when combined with texture, pattern and finish.

Each day of Advent we will be sharing with you the wonderful work produced by the artists and artisans we represent. We hope you love them as much as we do!
We begin with Norah Kennedy, Stroud based willow worker and basket maker. Norah takes her art to a whole new level with intricate weaves and patterns as well as her asymmetrically finished baskets. What Norah doesn’t know about willow and basketry isn’t worth knowing. Her work is based in a deep understanding of traditional techniques and her baskets transcend time with one foot in the past and another firmly in the present, as these pieces are functional and made for everyday use. They will last a lifetime and become an heirloom. They are beautiful and to be cherished.
Our next ‘First Thursday’ event will be on 1st December 7-9pm, when Alexander Norman will be in conversation with Madeleine Bunting, about Alexander’s latest work, Dalai Lama: The Biography. Alexander has known the Dalai Lama for over 30 years both as a colleague and friend. Madeleine, past religions editor on the Guardian, has also met the Dalai Lama, so this should prove to be a very interesting conversation between these two Painswick residents. @gregthatcherart will be in Painswick next month to draw and paint the beautiful Yew Trees at St Mary’s church again. He travels every year from Canada religiously. Moving Day! Handmade In - Painswick have packed up the last of their wares and set off from the Painswick Centre to develop a new exciting, collaborative project! Having set up their pop-up shop in the Gardener Room at the Painswick Centre in 2020, with the aim of supporting the work of local artists and artisans as we emerged from the challenges of COVID lockdowns, we went on to establish the cafe in the Gardener Room, which was so well supported by locals and visitors alike.
