We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded £29,000 by the The National Lottery from the Heritage Emergency Fund. This much needed funding is incredibly important to help sustain us through these difficult times. It will be used to support our online lecture infrastructure, website, and museum operational costs. The funding was only possible thanks to National Lottery players so we would like to say a huge thank you to them and to the National Lottery Heritage Fund

It is with great regret that we must announce the POSTPONEMENT of the WALLOP SPITFIRE WEEK planned from 21 - 27 September. In light of the recent announcement by the Government to restrict groups to six, the Museum decided there would be pinch points of attendees at the event which could contravene Covid guidelines. We plan to run this event in March 2021, if rulings allow it at that time.

We are sorry to announce that we have had to postpone our Aircraft Enthusiasts' Fair & Model Show until next year. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, we do not feel we would be able to run the event whilst keeping appropriate social distancing measures in place to keep everyone safe. We hope this popular event will be able to go ahead early next year - tickets and further information to follow.

We have enhanced our measures to ensure our visitors are as safe as possible when visiting the museum - in addition to the 30 minute interval arrival times, we have added stickers to remind people to social distance. There are also plenty of hand sanitiser stations throughout and visitors are required to wear masks.

Keep your eyes peeled for our 'Taking Flight' Community Art Trail, which will be on display until the end of October. These fantastic knitted planes were created by community groups and individuals. Originally on display at the Museum, they have now flown out to different locations across the county. See if you can spot them at local libraries and other venues. Why not share a photo of the plane and where you found it? Don't forget to tag the museum. Email your photos to [email protected]

25/08/2020

Over the last few days as the weather has taken a turn for the worst, we have seen an increase in visitor numbers to the Museum which has impacted on our operational risk assessment and prompted us to make some changes to ensure you have a good experience with us.

We have now set up 30 minute arrival time blocks to limit the number of people entering the Museum at any point. You can arrive any time within that 30 minutes and we would ask that you wait just outside the foyer if there are more than 10 people in reception.

We have also set up two routes into the Museum to ensure that the first corridor does not get congested. This will allow you to take your time and be able to read the panels and see the exhibits whilst also maintaining social distancing.

I would also like to remind all visitors to adhere to social distancing guidelines throughout the Museum and to be kind to your fellow visitors and the Museum staff. We are all in this together and our main objective is that you have a fantastic visit. We hope to see you soon.

Thank you.

Lucy Johnson – Chief Executive

The RFC memorial, out of the kiln, but the 3 pieces have yet to be joined together. The front, on the left, shows the "corporate" view of the RFC, with the weathering that may be expected if a memorial stone is left lying around for a century with no maintenance. The obverse shows the reality of being an RFC pilot. Sitting on the fuel tank, in a plane made of wood and highly flammable doped fabric, meant that when hit there was a high chance of the plane catching fire. The RFC didn't issue parachutes in an effort to make the pilots land their valuable planes, instead of baling out, regardless of the cost to human life. As a newly trained British pilot, your life expectancy when you first arrived at the front was a couple of weeks on average, going down to 3 or 4 days at its worst, as the German pilots were better trained and hadbetter planes than the British. The British answer was to just pump out more poor quality planes, and send pilots over with ever less training, to try and win by sheer numbers - a vicious circle as this then increased the death rate. It will be on display at the Chapel Arts Studios in Andover as part of the Themes of Life exhibition, from 27 September to 17 October, along with another piece of mine, and other paintings about local RFC pilot Wilson, the first RFC flying casualty.
