Hiya! I'm Sarah, the third member of the Display Team. I am from the United States and have truly cherished my time working on the Victorian Visions exhibition. I have really enjoyed the experience and knowledge I have gained from this hands-on experience.

My favorite object from our exhibition is the ladies bolero jacket. This jacket was a surprise treasure because we had not seen the jacket until the month before the exhibition opening. When we opened the tissue we couldn't believe how beautifully the beading and lace detail had remained intact. This bolero jacket is an example of a Victorian mourning dress. Queen Victoria introduced the idea of deep mourning after the death of her husband, King Albert.

You can find out more about the jacket and the Victorian period in our exhibition at MUSA!

Hello I'm Hayley, another member of the Display Team! I am from America and I enjoyed being a member of the Victorian Visions team for the past few months. It's been a great learning experience and a unique part of my education here at St Andrews.

My favorite object in our exhibition is this reproduced photo of Allan Robertson (1815-1859) from University Special Collections due to a story involving him and Tom Morris Senior (1821-1908). Allan was a feather ball maker in St Andrews and oversaw Tom as his apprentice. When the guttie ball replaced the feather ball due to its durability, cost, and distance, Allan refused to use them or make them. However, one day he caught Morris using one of the guttie balls and fired him on the spot.

You can learn about more golf in St Andrews and stories like one when visiting our exhibition!

Hi! I am Pauline, from the Display Team, and I am from France! I really enjoyed working on this exhibition, as it helped me to acquire new skills and to discover a part of St Andrews history not very well known!
One of my favourite objects in the exhibition is this head of Christ, found at the end of the Victorian period with two other heads (a crown head and the head of st Andrew) in the monastic latrine (!). It still has paint remains on the hair, and the st Andrew's head revealed during the conservation work Historic Environment Scotland kindly undertook for us remains of gold in the beard and red on the tunic. These heads are very nice examples of sculptures which could have been found in the St Andrews Cathedral!
Come to our exhibition to admire those newly restored sculptures!

Hello! I'm Charlotte from the education team. LOOK AT THESE BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF STAINED GLASS! They are over 600 years old and were discovered in the cathedral grounds in 1904, when archaeologist Linksill found this newspaper article and pasted it into his scrapbook. When the light hits them you can still see the colours!

Hello there! I'm Danielle from the Publications Team, and this pair of Victorian spectacles is one of my favorite objects in the exhibition. As a part of the Victorian Life case, they offer an idea of the kinds of everyday items that people in the 19th century would have used...and as a glasses-wearer myself, I think they're quite nice! It is interesting to see the decorative nature of their case and the simple design of the spectacles themselves. I might just have to look for a similar pair! Hello! I'm Amy from the Printed Materials team. My favourite object is the Tom Morris feather ball from 1850. I love it because I have spent many years trailing around the golf course with my Dad and whilst I am hopeless at golf, it's a lovely reminder of the history there is to the sport.

I have also chosen this object because these past few weeks have been filled with golf for our team! What with Sergio Garcia winning the Masters to our own Victorian Mini Golf kids session last week, and our very popular Golf Through the Ages workshop last night at The British Golf Museum - St Andrews, we are golfed out!

Hello! I’m Charlotte from the Marketing Team.
I think my favourite object in the exhibition is the picture of "The Sick Baby"! Our good friend Hugh Lyon Playfair is holding a man dressed up as a baby - and I have a lot of questions. We know that Playfair was a man who enjoyed many things: when he didn't help restoring the town of St Andrews, he played golf or had theatre plays in his back garden. That's probably were the baby comes in as well... but come along to our exhibition and find out some more about this fascinating man!

Hello! I’m Veronica from the Marketing Team.
Among my favourite objects from the exhibition there are these Victorian postcards. I have always liked receiving post and when I was a child I used to collect postcards and dream of travelling and seeing the world. I find fascinating that postcards started to become popular in the UK during the Victorian period. This happened as the one penny stamp made them an affordable way to send short messages to friends and relatives.

As it is International Women's Day we would like to celebrate some of the fabulous women who have helped make our exhibition possible!

On the left is a dashing woman from the early 20th century, clearly having a great old time on the Swilken Bridge. On the right is our team photo showing the 9 amazing ladies involved in curating Victorian Visions.

We are definitely celebrating the power of women across the centuries today and we hope you will too by joining us from Saturday 11th March when Victorian Visions opens to the public.
