Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust A small and determined group looking after and providing access to some of the UK's Narrow Gauge Heritage.

The Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Society was founded some forty-five years ago with the aim of establishing a public narrow gauge railway in Hampshire, and later evolved into an equipment operating group. In October 2006 it was incorporated into the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust, an important milestone which will lead to further developments. With bases for its operations at the Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum in Hampshire in the south of England and the Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre in Sussex, the Trust conserves and operates narrow gauge equipment dating back to the end of the nineteenth century.

Mission: At Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum, efforts are focused on the once widespread narrow gauge railway in industry. Here the Trust's two petrol locomotives and many other varieties of rolling stock are kept, and see regular use both for work on the re-creation of a narrow gauge railway, for demonstrations of industrial trains to visitors and for operating passenger trains.

***Press Release***
Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust can now announce that the remainder of the Trusts rolling stock has been donated to the Hampton & Kempton Waterworks Trust. The various wagons and materials will be a vital resource in their proposed 3 mile extension from their existing site. Much of the rolling stock left the Brickworks today along with a privately owned coach which has been purchased by Kempton. The privately owned 21HP small F C Hibberd Type 39 locomotive at the Brickworks will also go to Kempton on loan.

We are proud to announce that today we took delivery of items from the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Trust.

These include Bagnall Wendy 2091 of 1919, Motorail Agwi Pet 2 4724 of 1939, Motorail Bambridge Hall 5226 of 1930, ex-Dinorwic slate wagon and ex-Ramsgate Scenic Railway coach.

We look forward to the arrival of Hunslet Cloister 542 of 1891 next week. We thank the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Trust for the donation of these items, and we will continue to look after them and safeguard their future.

Well, that all folks !

Many thanks to all who came, some from quite a distance, and travelled on our last operating day yesterday, Sunday 27th October. We received numerous good wishes and wonderful comments from many, many visitors.

The Trustees and operating members would like to thank all of the lovely people that have travelled with us over the years, its been a blast, but all good things come to an end one day.

Also a huge thanks, round of applause and slap on the back to the volunteers over many years who have given their time and efforts to supporting the Society and the Trust we couldn't have done it without you !

The locomotives will keep on rolling, in their new home at Statfold Barn and be cared for, hopefully for many generations to enjoy in the future. Do please go and see them and the other amazing locomotives in the Statfold collection. If you have never been before, then you are in for a treat.

The Trust are pleased to announce the donation of a 7 lever knee frame to the Lynton & Barnstable Railway Trust.
It was recognised as the type that was originally used on the railway and would be an ideal addition for their Chelfham Signalbox. Let’s hope it gets to signal trains again one day in the not too “distant” future 😃

Dear all, we can confirm that HNGRT will be running the 2 ft passenger railway for the last time at the brickwork's site at Burseldon on Sunday 27th October... all aboard for one last trip. All HNGRT equipment will be leaving in November.

*** PRESS RELEASE ***

After 55 years the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust is to close, following issues with its site at the Brickworks in Bursledon near Southampton where it was given a rolling one year lease which has stopped it obtaining grants to build a restoration shed. Also the decreasing numbers and increasing age of the volunteers and members has meant that it has struggled to find the necessary manpower required to keep the railway running.

Following meetings with its members to gain approval it was agreed that HNGRT would give notice to leave Bursledon and distribute its assets to other Narrow Gauge Trusts where they could ensure that their future was secure.

HNGRT can now announce that many of its significant items as listed below will be passed to The Statfold Narrow Gauge Museum Trust.

Bagnall Wendy No 2091 of 1919
Hunslet Cloister No 542 of 1891
MR petrol Simplex Brambridge Hall No 5226 of 1936
MR petrol Simplex Agwi Pet No4736 of 1939
Ex Ramsgate Electric Railway Coach circa 1936

Phil Mason said that he and the other trustees were confident that the locomotives would be well looked after and continue to be seen and enjoyed by the many visitors to Statfold Barn Railway which is already seen as the Narrow Gauge National Collection. HNGRT has always been keen to see its locomotives visiting other railways and sites and the fact that the locomotives in the Statfold collection do so as well was something that ticked another box for HNGRT

The two steam locomotives will move to Statfold Barn when their current hire agreements expire in November. Cloister is currently at Bressingham and Wendy at Amberley.

HNGRT will make further announcements on the disposal of the rest of its collection, which includes a number of wagons in the near future

Henry Noon, Statfold Trustee, added “we are delighted to have been chosen by HNGRT as future custodians of these iconic narrow gauge locos which are a valuable addition to our collection. We fully acknowledge the effort made over the years to secure these locos for the future and we now look forward to continuing in the same vein.”

20/08/2019

As some of you will already be aware The Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust will be leaving its current home of 22 years at Bursledon Brickworks at the end of this year. 2ft gauge passenger trains will be unlikely in the near future on the site although it is very much hoped to have a final running day in October. The future for HNGRT is very much up in the air and the trustees are looking at ways to ensure a bright future for the Trusts assets. Further announcements will be made in the near future.
